1754 - Kings College opened in New York City. The institution of higher learning admitted eight students and one faculty member, Dr. Samuel Johnson, who also served as school president. Eventually became Columbia University. Many prestigious awards come from this university, including the Columbia Award for Journalism and the Pulitzer Prize for Journalism (named after Joseph Pulitzer, a former Columbia professor). Alumni include Rogers, Hart & Hammerstein, Leonard Bernstein, Sheldon Leonard, Jack Benny, Melvin Douglas, Charles Coburn, Art Garfunkel, & I remember Jamie Hammerstein telling me he taught Joel Bishoff there & thru JB, that’s how Jamie came to produce I LOVE YOU, YOU’RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE
