Had a full theater day, and spent quite a lot of money.
GREY GARDENS
I arrived at the theater at about 12:30 and asked if they had any student rush left. Received Front Mezz, row B (which was actually a very wonderful seat). The mezzanine was absolutely empty. I moved down to front row mezz, and noticed two empty seats in the front row orchestra, which I did not take because I enjoyed the mezz view so much.
I'm in love with a lot of this show. The staging actually made me think of the Disney parks (not in a bad way - like the animatronic robots) - everything was so perfectly staged (the sets were AMAZING), and everyone looked dead on to the characters in the documentary. The first act broke my heart - a little hard to follow at the beginning, but got better with time. I kept thinking, "Who is this random guy at the piano?" until they introduced him about a half hour in. Everyone was fantastic in their roles, especially Erin Davie.
Act two was the same as act one - slow at first (I don't like "Revolutionary Costume" as much as everyone else does), but it got better. I LOVED how the characters from the first act were incorporated! "Around the World" was beautiful, and I admit I teared up but didn't cry when Edith was calling for Edie when she couldn't open the can.
As a side note, I think every show should have the type of merchandise and deals this show has. I got two t-shirts (green and red), and a key chain for $30. Every show should have the variety of shirts and pins that this one does.
Dinner at Applebee's (EXPENSIVE), and then...
110 IN THE SHADE
This show was a madhouse with theater people tonight. Just some spotted include David Hyde Pierce with Debra Monk and Edward Hibbert, Hunter, Susan, and Heidi from [title of show] (I wanted to say something about how I loved it so badly), Todd Buonopane, and Michael Longoria.
I felt much the same about GREY GARDENS, except that I felt Audra was extremely fierce and, don't kill me, should've tied with Ebersole for the Tony. Maybe it's because I feel a little personally connected with Lizzie, but when Lizzie cried, I wanted to cry. When she was happy, I was happy for her. Christopher Innvar and Steve Kazee - what voices! The music was a little old fashioned and kind of boring ("Melisande" almost put me to sleep), but songs like "Everything Beautiful" made up for it.
I would say GREY GARDENS was the better show of the two, but this one was really beautiful. Please see it before it closes!

Posted: 7/9/07 at 12:04amWas that discounted merchandise because the show is closing? Because that's way cheaper than usual. And if so I gotta get my butt over there before they sell out.

I think so! I was pleasantly surprised about it. The shirts are a little stretchy (since they're American Apparel), but they're so beautiful. I want the purple one, too. I may have to go back.
But they were doing a 2 shirt for $30 with a free keychain deal, or a t-shirt and program for $25.

Glad you had such a great time at both shows elphie!
I have one question: At the merchandise stand, do you think there would still be merchandise left on the 21st (I'd love to get it at a cheaper price) or would they be sold out?

But I didn't notice the t-shirt/program deal. Must go back!

ok, havent posted here in FOREVER but someone pointed this out to me. So I'll tell ya the deal since well I sell it..
There right we just started the sale yesterday. its 2 shirts for $30, or a shirt and a program for the norm price of a shirt $25. but programs at $15 still on there own. The DVD set is now $40, the mugs are down to $12 and the playing cards are down to $9. keychains are free if you spend $30 and come the last week whatever is left of the pins will be given out I'm told. So we'll prob start having more sales a bit every week.
There are no more posters or magnets and we wont be getting anymore at all. but we expect more tote bags which are going down to $20.

what a wonderful day of show-seeing, popular elphie!
i also preferred GREY GARDENS, but 110 was great, too. as you said a little old-fashioned, but the cast was excellent. and yeah, Steve Kazee's voice is so magnificent!
and yeah, i really need to get a GREY GARDENS program or something...soon.

Posted: 7/9/07 at 11:10ampopular elphie I love your reviews so much. Thanks for sharing! Since when does 110 have a Sunday Evening performance?? Did you happen to see what Merchandise looked like at 110? What they had and possible prices? I didn't get a chance to check it out at all the night I went. I have to say that Grey Gardens deal is so tempting! I really hope they still have shirts when I get to NYC next Sunday.
