Glad Billy Crystal has gotten his own show. But why exactly does the show (or any one man show for that matter) need a director? (Des McAnuff for this one)

Billy needs a director to show him how to present himself on Broadway. He is a TV guy.

Because a show is a show. Every show needs a director.

This is an interesting point though. What other one man shows in the past have had or not had a director? Does I AM MY OWN WIFE need one? jk lol

Alright, fair enough. But he is (was) a stand-up comic first, tho, shouldn't he already know how to present himself

A Broadway production is a lot different than doing stand-up comedy.

That is one one-man show i would love to see (im not a big fan of one man/woman shows).

From what I understand, this is more of an autobiographical play than stand-up comedy. It's probably along the lines of Elaine Stritch at Liberty.

I know one shouldn't review a show until it opens--much less review an invited dress rehearsal. However, this is a show that needs no protection from a preview period.

What a wonderful, wonderful, lovely piece of theatre. The fact that it is absolutely hilarious is not surprising--the fact that it is absolutely heart breaking is, perhaps. It's a beautiful story. Billy is a triumph, and I have a deep respect for him--he's a great storyteller.

I'm not going to say much. I just highly recommend 700 Sundays--if you can get a ticket!

Did someone seriously just ask if I AM MY OWN WIFE needed a director?

EVERY performer needs a director. And, Billy's show isn't stand up (which needs a director, too, btw). It may be autobiographical, but it is a play. It's like one of John Leguizamo's plays--it's not stand up. It's a fine line--and one could argue that stand up is theatre (I happen to believe it is).

You didn't mention Idina Menzel or Melissa Errico, you might have to describe to bronx who JL is...

I saw the final dress on Weds night. It was absolutely fantastic. Hilarious in the first act, and very very touching and heart-warming in the second. Des MacAnuff did a wonderful job directing Billy - very theatrical. Exactly what it needed. It'll be a huge hit.
