Just saw the second preview(11/13 mat.) of Billy Crystal's new show. In two segments with a 15 minute intermission, the show is wonderful, but sometimes tedious in spots.
The show tells us about Crystal's life with his Dad and other relatives. His Dad died when he was 15 and thus he spent about 700 Sundays with him on his Dad's only day off. It is a loving tribute and brings us back to the 50's/60's and to the present(his Mom died in 2001).
The show is presented with many home movies shown on the "windows" of a mockup of the house where he grew up in Long Beach, L.I. It is witty, funny, heartwarming and at times rushed(when he talks about his introduction to Jazz) or uninteresting, when he highlights some aspects of his upbringing. When Billy does his "schtick" he is fantastic. He is also a great storyteller as he relates a phone conversation about his aunt and her gay daughter--funny, moving, and touching.
Since this was only the second preview, maybe they will cut and splice some of the dialogue to make the presentation smoother.
I'd rate this show 8 1/2 out of 10. BUT, Billy Crystal's performance is 10 out of 10.
Note to the scenic designer; The aerial on top of the house from the 1950's is a new Radio Shack model with UHF elements. They didn't make those in the 1950's.
