I heard about what happened to Idina from a girl in a store buying a Wicked shirt, and my family was soooo bummed not to see her. I just felt really bad for HER, that happening in her last weekend and having to miss her second to last show! Anyways, to the actual show...
The house was full, there were a bunch of people trying to get cancellation tickets, and when Shoshana came out for the first time she got a lot of cheers, especially for a crowd that mostly came to see Idina. I thought Shoshana was wonderful!!! Her belt was absolutely fabulous, and she made The Wizard and I and No Good Deed Goes Unpunished a little more soulful. I thought No Good Deed was her real showstopping song, she did all the notes and emotions perfectly and was amazing...i dont think ive ever seen it performed better. Her acting was great, she didnt really copy off Idina or Eden that much, and she seemed natural and like she knew her character like it really was herself. She is quite a bit bigger than Idina and Eden, and it was good seeing someone who isnt totally skinny playing someone beautiful and really taking charge of the show, without being Tracy in hairspray (even though she was the understudy at one point)
I was actually impressed with Joey Macintyre (sp?), his acting was really good for a boy band member, and with the notes they changed his singing was fine too! The changes in As Long as You're Mine worked fine, i just didnt like the lowering of the line "It's up that i fell", but the rest sounded fine with Shoshana singing the upper harmonies and him singing the lower.
I liked George Hearn, i think i did probably the best job possible with the character that is so undeveloped and boring, and it definitely showed during curtain call when he by far got the least applause of everyone.
Carole Shelley was wonderful as she always has been, i think she hit the nail on the head with every line and emotion she puts through and is absolute perfection.
Jennifer Laura Thompson did a great job as Galinda. I think she tried a liiiittle too hard to be Kristin, but she is probably the most difficult person to replace. My parents thought she was exactly like kristin chenoweth, but i disagreed having memorized how kristin did everything in the show, and JLT definitely did not take every little comical thing. There were a few things i thought she did funnier than Kristin ("I know, *points and whispers*I know, exactly what they need..") and some things Kristin did better. I overall enjoyed her performance, but i cant say i didnt miss Kristin Chenoweth. and sorry i keep comparing her to her, its just when i think of Glinda Kristin is like the picture i have in my head.
After the show, after i met fred willard in the audience (from the sierra mist free commercial...eeee!) only Shoshana and Joey signed, and Shoshana was soooo nice. She kind of looked around and started to walk off because she didnt expect any one to ask for her autograph, but then we started screaming and she came over and was soo sweet and took pictures and was really charming. Oh, and i was also surprised that after the show or at any point in the show there was no announcement about hoping Idina gets better...but i dont know, maybe they wouldnt want to put her business out there or something. But all in all, i had a GREAT night, and dont mind at all to see Shoshana again in march!!
