I caught the national tour of 9 to 5 last night. I went in expecting a fun show and that is exactly what I got. The cast was extremely talented and just looked like they were having a blast. Dee Hoty was fantastic and was just perfect for the role of Violet. I did not care too much for Diana DeGarmo, but then again I never really have. Her singing and acting were fine, she was just nowhere near as good as Dee Hoty and Mamie Parris. Mamie Parris was the perfect Judy. "Get Out and Stay Out" stopped the show cold. What a voice. Joseph Mahowald was great as Mr. Hart and Kristine Zbnorik was hilarious as Roz. Overall, the cast was exceptional.
Now on to the technical aspects. I loved the sets. I was skeptical before going in because of I could not stand Kenneth Foy's work for the dreadful High School Musical tour a few years back. These sets were in the same style with the rotating paneled columns, but it just worked much better for this show. The show has os many different locations and is always moving and the simplicity of the sets really helped keep the action moving. I really liked how the ensemble moved the pieces and the cool lights they had going as the scene changes were made.
I really did not mind the screen with Dolly Parton at all. It was not overused at all, and it really helped set the tone for the show.
All in all this was a very fun show with a great cast. I would definitely check it out if it is coming to your city!
