"My unqualified vote for Cassie:

Charlotte dAmboise "

Oh my Smartful Dodger - that sounds delightful...

Now what would you say if today I started over? Without a thing but this taped together four leaf clover And I'll pretend like everything is already alright And I'll run toward the sun till the castle's out of sight

Best12Bars, I think I fully agree with you in that Agnes DeMille is probably the one person responsible for the emergence of legends like Michael Kidd, Bob Fosse, Robbins, and Bennett. I think people don't mention her a lot just because she wasn't a director/choreographer.
Margo again makes an excellent point in saying that the best directors sometimes develop material in a way that they become authors of the show itself, think The King and I without Uncle Tom's Cabin as choreographed by Robbins or the montage in A Chorus Line without Bennett's perfect almost cinematic technique. One of my issues with new directors/choreographers is that they fail to become authors of their shows, they fail to let their own vision speak. My dad has been working in the theater industry for decades, and he tells me that when a Fosse show came out you went to see it because it was a Fosse show, it wasn't a Cy Coleman show or a Kander & Ebb show, it was a Fosse show. When I go to see something choreographed by Jerry Mitchell I go expecting to see great choreography but I never go saying this is going to be a Jerry Mitchell show, and definitely no one says they're going to see a Wayne Cilento show, that would be tragic. Michael Bennett did this with A Chorus Line, it was HIS show, why should the show be modified? In a way I could say that perhaps they should have the four guys dancing around Cassie with mirrors in "The Music and the Mirror," which was an idea cut during workshops and that caused some of the cast to turn against Donna McKechnie, but to re-interpret A Chorus Line would be insulting to Bennett's memory.

Just curious since I'm new to this whole board thing -- DO I WIN SOME SORT OF PRIZE FOR CALLING THE CASSIE CASTING THING ON WEDNESDAY!?!?! I swear, I'm not an insider. Really...

Smartful Dodger, no prize but if it makes you feel any better, as soon as I read the news I went like "wow, and someone just predicted it yesterday or something on BWW.com, how clever." So that's something.
