Mirth - She's doing a benefit.
I'm going to this
As far as Sheila "not making it," I'm actually surprised the the character actually makes it through the first cut and stays for the rest of the audition!
She comes off with so much attitude during the opening combination, not even doing all the steps... why would Zach even consider her for anything?
She's a "been there, done that" girl, and feels she has nothing left to prove on stage. And it's pretty obvious that she's worked with Zach before... but she's relying entirely on past history and not current abilities.
I would have cut her ass after the first five minutes, if she walked off stage in the middle of a combination like that.
BUT... as Zach says in his initial comments (after "God, I Hope I Get It"), his chorus for this particular show has some speaking parts, and he's not expecting them to be great actors... so he wants to see who they really are as people (hence, the premise for the rest of the show). I always thought he had some specific "attitude-filled" character in mind for Sheila to play in the fictional show.
Otherwise, she should have been outta there before the head shots were ever collected.
And I also used Zach's introductory premise of "small speaking parts" as to why these specific final eight were chosen. Not necessarily because they were the best dancers out of the group... but also because they fit the parts that he has in mind.
best - like usual, you beat me to it...
I would think Sheila's attitude would be destructive to unity in a "Chorus Line" ensemble where the whole goal is to not set yourself apart.
SPOILERS
The whole attempt to set herself apart from the others - especially lines to the effect of "If you want any women . . ." when Zach says something to the effect of "Ladies..." indicates that she is not a real team player.
The only time her "team" player sense comes into play is when Paul is injured, and she offers him painkillers - then jokes she has already taken a few that day. I think she would undermine the team concept, and be a distraction to unity.
If I were casting a one-woman show with an edge - I would think of Sheila - she is just too much edge for a chorus line where everyone is supposed to be seamless. The fact that we laugh at and like her character does not change the fact that she is not appropriate for the role (as is truthfully at least IMO, Cassie, but Zach is doing her a favor - where she has to work to become like others and dance without flair).
But, I will bow down to MB interpretation and comments.
