A Class Act Scene Breakdown --- PLEASE HELP!#0

Can anybody give me the scene breakdown of A Class Act according to the Playbill of either the Broadway and/or off-Broadway production (it would be great if someone could post both)?
Thanks for all the help!
(Also, if you know of any way that I could purchase a libretto to the show it would be immensly appreciated.)

Posted: 2/1/04 at 6:08pmBecause the premise of the musical is to make a musical out of the life of a lyricist (this in itself is a kinda bad thing), and not only that, but they use his songs (that he himself did not try to 'put out there') as the only songs in the show. His lyrics for A Chorus Line are pretty fantabulous, but judging from some of the ones featured in ACA, those seem to have been written at his peak and it was downhill afterwards.

Depends on how you see it ... it was a very DIFFERENT show ... I don't think it was in any way terrible.
I think it had a lot of heart ... some beautiful music and a lovely cast. Sadly, I don't think I was interested in knowing more about Ed Kleban, but eventually I thought the way they weaved the story around the music made for an interesting evening of theatre.
The cast was wonderful ... Donna Bullock, Randy Graff, Sara Ramirez, Lonny Price ... great performers.

I DO hope that some of you who are call the libretto to "A Class Act"-"terrible" actually SAW the show. The fact that it was nominated for a tony, for best musical as well as a nod for the book belies the idea that it was "terrible".. Show Music magazine (now unfortunatly, defunct) published the libretto in it's entirety.
The basic outline takes place in flashback style at a memorial for Klaban at the performace of Chorus Line where it became the longest running musical of all time. In a series of flashback we get a glimpse of why the creative mind, creates in spite of all obsticals. I found this to be one of the most profoundly moving musicals I have ever seen.
The music was superb. As one of the charater's reiterated "unlike anything I have ever heard". The fact that Sondheim himself had much good to say about Klaban's music may tell you something about it quality.
Many, Many excellent songs. My favorite was "Self Portrait". A song that tells of the fear of self revealment.
LOVED this show in it's entrety.

Posted: 2/2/04 at 10:33amBefore we start touting the fact that it was nominated for Tonys, let's please remember it was nominated in 2001. I recall reading several articles complaining about how they had to grope for shows to nominate and that's why Jane Eyre was nominated (not something I agree with, as I love JE, but with this in mine, Tony nominations for that year weren't hard to come by). I personally don't love the melodramatic nature of Self-Portait, but it's all about opinion.

I know this sounds like a lovefest, but once again I agree w/ Marian: a Tony nom does not mean a show is good. Sunset Blvd WON the year it was nominated just because it was up against a single other show (if memory serves) & the Tony had to go to SOMETHING. And Sunset is another terrible show. I worked A Class Act & saw it every night -- when you do that you usually becoe attached to a show & start to think it's better than it is. We never felt that way w/ ACA -- it was just a bad show. Having said that, some people really liked it. Calling Lonny Price a fine performer, BTW, suggests an unusual take on performers & talent. Lonny is a talented director, but has no biz being on a Bway stage w/ people like Randy Graff as an actor. Of course, none of this answers the original post, so I'll shut up!

A Class Act libretto was published commercially. I do not remember the name of the publisher, but contact The Drama Book Shop in NYC on W 40th Street, and I am fairly sure they will have a copy.
Alternate would be Applause Theatre Books on W 71st Street.
To find a website, I would start fiddling with those two store names.
Phone numbers for both are in Dir Asst.
