A Glorious CURTAINS (3/7 Matinee)

So many possibilities for the Tonys! It almost makes you sad because you want to give one to them all!
Yankee, what would you say about the book in general? I can easily see this being a year where Grey Gardens/Spring Awakening/Curtains splitting Best Musical/Book/Score. (Kinda like 2004, except DRS should have gotten BM over Spam) Having seen all three, who do you think gets what?

The book was nothing revolutionary or life-changing, just a good, old fashioned musical comedy book. Strategically placed jokes, snappy one-liners, but simplistic. I couldn't have asked for anything better.
I'd give BEST BOOK to GREY GARDENS, for the simple fact that it wasn't easy writing a musical based on the lives of 2 mysterious women. SPRING AWAKENING was little more than a cut-and-paste of Wedekind's play.
I'd give BEST SCORE to SPRING AWAKENING, even though the lyrics were extremely juvenine (blah, blah, blah). The music is just that good that it overcomes any lyrical shortcomings.
I'd give BEST MUSICAL to CURTAINS. It's a crowd pleaser, plain and simple.

Wow, Yankee! I went into this show wanting so much to like it that I was afraid I'd be terribly disappointed. However, the show exceeded my highest expectations and hopes.
I'm so glad others are feeling the same. This one deserves to run.

Rath - Agreed completely. After being so terribly let down by Spring Awakening, I was afraid to get my hopes up so high again, but Curtains just went above and beyond.
Feel good show of the year.

re: A Glorious CURTAINS (3/7 Matinee)#30
Posted: 3/8/07 at 7:50amIt isn't perfect by any means (The score is zippy and moves the plot along, but IMHO not really more than that, and I think it needs a good 'show doctor' to make some sense of the killers motives and punch up some tired jokes here and there) but I largely agree with your rave. I disliked MILLIE and wasn't warm on DROWSY, but I was plesantly surprised with how cheerfully, plushly entertaining CURTAINS was - the prefect embodiment of "the tired businessman's show". It's going to be a smash.

Posted: 3/8/07 at 8:18amI think people are getting a little carried away - just glad to find out that it's not awful as some had said on this board when it opened in LA. I agree about Pierce as front runner for the Tony - but I'm predicting that the New York critics will be divided over it at best.

I agree that critics will be split on it, with DHP getting most of the raves.
But I think CURTAINS will be sold on enthusiastic word-of-mouth.

Posted: 3/8/07 at 8:34amDo you really think Monk could win Best Actress over Ebersole? I haven't seen Curtains yet..am seeing it April 7th. But I thought that noone could beat Ebersole after her performance..

Agreed with both of you, Mallardo and Master. It's not a perfect show and it'll certainly have a mixed bag of reviews, but, given the very enthusiastic reception yesterday, I think it'll be around here for a long while.
It's just an all around fun, unpretentious delight.
Regarding Monk beating Ebersole - not gonna happen. Definitely a nomination, though.

Posted: 3/8/07 at 8:39amA nomination wouldn't surprise me..I was just so blown away by Eversole's performance..Love them both, but can't imagine anyone beating her for the Tony.

Ebersole has a significant amount more stage time, that in itself will pull Monk out of contention, although she will be nominated.

No, mallardo, that's not it at all. Read my original post on this thread.

Why would that be deleted? Is there a CURTAINS-hating mod?

Obviously no one knows, Zeitoujo, as no one has responded to your 50+ inquiries about that.
Why don't you stop by the box office and ask?

Couldn't agree more with Yankee - saw Curtains last Saturday night and while I wanted to like it, I ended up LOVING it. As said in earlier posts, it is just a feel good show. Everything about it works and works well.
Just a bit confused about Ziemba, she has plenty of stage time, great songs and should have been above the title along with Monk - while Ebersole's got the Tony, Ziemba deserves a nod for best actress.

Most everything works - some moments can be shortened, others could be made longer, the penis jokes get tired after a while, but, on the whole, it's nothing that could kill it.
Ziemba did indeed deserve to be above the title, but should be ruled featured. She has no shot in the leading category, but could have a great chance in the featured one.

Posted: 3/8/07 at 4:40pmI meant to ask earlier - there was a joke towards the end of the first act about clam chowder (and the conductor). What was it and why was it funny? I somehow missed the point.
