A Good Way To Keep LITTLE SHOP on Broadway
#0A Good Way To Keep LITTLE SHOP on Broadway
Posted: 6/5/04 at 9:43pmI think it is just about clear with all of the discounts and now Joey Fatone (who I can't see playing a meek, nerd who works in a plant shop) that Little Shop of Horrors hasn't gotten much time on Broadway. Also, with Kerry Butler and Doug Sills leaving as well, the only other two that could maybe keep people coming, the show is heading down an ugle path. My solution is Steve Martin re-creating his role as Orin the dentist. Personally, I know that he is significantly older but I doubt and more sane. Plus, I think we can all agree that he was the most memorable part of the movie. I also am aware that he would have to play all the other roles as well, but hey, I think he would do well. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Posted: 6/5/04 at 10:22pmI don't think so. Besides obviously not having the money, he's way too old at this point in his career to come back to Broadway and do eight shows a week.

Posted: 6/5/04 at 10:26pmBilly, he's only 3 years older than Bernadette. And a lot younger than Judi Dench and a hell of a lot other people who perform 8 times a week.

Posted: 6/5/04 at 10:42pmWell, maybe it's not the schedule----I think the role requires someone more youthful. The role isn't as old as Martin is, and although he has the stamina, he just kind of doesn't fit it anymore, it seems to me.

Posted: 6/6/04 at 12:25amI honestly believe putting Steve Martin as a option would be a great way to liven up the production, and he may be not as youthful looking, but thats what they use make up for, also his part in the production could be a great deal of publicity and more audience members, he already has the feeling of the character and would portray it perfectly

i never wish for any show to close, no matter how bad i think it is, when a show closes it puts a lot of people out of work.

I can definitely see him coming to Broadway at some point, but he's waaaay overqualified for that part and is doing pretty well for himself these days. This isn't to say that I even think he's anymore qualified than Doug or Rob. I just think it's kind of a minimal part in this production and I was sad to see Doug with so little to work with. They even forbid him from improvising!

We need a big Hollywood name in the part of Seymour to save Little Shop! (Bigger than Fatone.) Hmmm who is a big Hollywwod name, kind of dorky, has at least some stage experience.....I'VE GOT IT! Frankie Muniz!!!!!!!

Posted: 6/6/04 at 1:56amJoey Fatone as Seymour seems like a horrible choice, they really do need a much better person,

Posted: 6/6/04 at 2:11amAn adventurous thought: Euan Morton as Orin. Yes, we all think of him in a wig w/ so much eye makeup they had to take it off w/ a trowel -- but he's an outstanding actor w/ a stunningly beautiful voice. Besides, it'd help keep him in the country & part of the Bway community.

Posted: 6/6/04 at 3:31amI think its great that everyone cares so much about finding people to save these shows, but there are plenty of talented people that are being put out of work by the Joey Fatones and whatnot...he surprised me in Rent and I enjoyed what little he did, but c'mon...with either a close or a popstar taking over people are going to be out of work...so, let a show close and another open with new people that might just make it big...

Posted: 6/6/04 at 7:46amI seriously doubt that Kerry Butler and Douglas Sills are what's keeping the show open. They're both great in what they do, but... seriously. Half the people in the audience could give a damn who's playing Audrey. The name "Little Shop of Horrors" is why people are there.

Here's a thought - maybe they should have done the show on Broadway 15 years ago - before every freakin' dinner theatre, community theatre and high school in the country did it!
I know more 15-year-old white girls who've played "Crystal" or "Chiffon"...

Posted: 6/6/04 at 11:19amAmen Jon. And if you're going to do it, at least cast the damn thing right. They have failed in every way and continue to do so. Steve Martin is way to good for this show. And he could do it for nothing, he's loaded, so that's hardly an issue.

Posted: 6/6/04 at 12:14pmThe roles is also a little small for him, yes....I think he's be an amazing Bialystock in "The Producers"--incredible large role, and hysterically funny. THIS is the role Martin needs if he ever chooses to do Broadway.

Posted: 6/6/04 at 12:16pmIndeed. He doesn't need to do the "day late, dollar short" production if LS.
