Posted: 7/1/04 at 7:52pmAnyone wanna help me again? Im at Tisch this summer and I was assigned a chunk of "A Little Night Music" to perform the role of Anne. Am I to assume that Anne is a "ditzy" sort of character? The song I have to sing is "Everyday A Little Death" but, also perform Act 1 Scene 6 before the song with my partner. I'm excited to read this entire book tonight because I really don't know much about the show ashamed to say...

It's a great role that you can do a lot with. Sondheim and Wheeler have given Anne a lot of contradictions that all make sense in her final scenes.

A fun idea might be to rent the Bergman film SMILES OF A SUMMER NIGHT, which it is based on.
It's a wonderful film and all the characters and names are the same- a little more explored dramatically. You'll see- she's not a ditz, she's very compassionately drawn.
You'll enjoy it, I'm sure.

Naive. Not a ditz.
She has been married how many months and is still a virgin?
She thinks she knows more than she does.

Sexually nieve which draws a sharp contract to Charlotte who is anything but. When she sings "Ah,how true!" it is (or should be) that she hasn't the slightest idea what she is talking about, she is just echoing Charlott's sentiment so it will appear that she knows what she is talking about. If played well it can be very funny and yet moving. In the original production, Prince had Anne look out thoughtfully and then bite into one of the cookies on the last chord. This usually drew a laugh.
And actually I prefer the term "nerds", as these are people who are too weird even for "Star Trek" conventions.
