A Mini-Rant Of Why Joseph Should Never Be A Reality Show & More#1
Posted: 12/20/06 at 8:22pmWhy are BBC & NBC so moronic to cast musicals, the only untouched classification of the fine arts that has not been modernized so drastically, with (gulp) reality TV shows! We don't want revivals of The Sound Of Muic, Grease, or Joseph JUST so we get another cheap plastic revival that got the TV channels moolah for getting people to watch their shows!!!! It's so insane. A practicaly perfect art form is now ruined by fans of EyEDEeeNa and kRIstiN and bad film versions of Phantom, The Producers, and Rent. Now Tim Burton is directing Sweeny Todd starring Borat and Johnnny Depp! What else could go wrong? Maybe Legally Blonde will become an anime movie projected on to the stage! Maybe Les Miz trades in it's turntable for a plasma screen HD tv showing millions of people on barricades! Maybe Rent will close so a new revival can open with a reality tv all-star cast!

Only when they stop reinforcing such generalizations.

Here have a cup of tea, a bex, then enjoy a nice lie down...Have you stopped to think, that while i don't agree with these types of shows either, that they just might be good for Broadway and musical theatre in general..

but, don't you people get it? if these kind of shows succeed then a whole bunch of new broadway fans might be created and no one wants that. they'll come here and spend their money on shows which will create incentive for there to be more shows and thus more of the broadway community will be working actually on broadway. that's not the american way, people! we want broadway for us! it's our place and those simple folk from the middle of the country who don't know the history of broadway like we do should be barred from setting foot in theatres.
sure it starts with reality tv, but where does it end? i'll tell you where: with those people who watch the shows coming here to contribute their cash to our community and that's unacceptable. we need to protest this kinda thing in the strongest way possible. to start with, i demand that the term show business be abolished! it's not about business, it's about art, man!

I agree with papa. As much As i hate to admit it, sometimes you need to dumb something down to make it accessible to a wider audience. Once you get them hooked into thinking that a B'way show is something that they can like, and being interested in it doesn't make them "Faggy",then you can open up a whole new world for them. There is a reason why they are using shows like Grease and Joseph for this idea. While the majority of the posters on this board would probably love a reality show to cast Dolly Levi or Coalhouse Walker, Mr. and Mrs. America in Skokie Illinois would probably rather watch re-runs of Deal or No Deal. Grease is something everyone knows and loves.
I think it is good.

From the screenplay of ALL ABOUT EVE:
BILL
The Theatuh, the Theatuh-
- what book of rules says the
Theater exists only within some
ugly buildings crowded into one
square mile of New York City? Or
London, Paris or Vienna?
Listen, junior. And learn. Want to
know what the Theater is? A flea
circus. Also opera. Also rodeos,
carnivals, ballets, Indian tribal
dances, Punch and Judy, a one-man
band - all Theater. Wherever
there's magic and make-believe and
an audience - there's Theater.
Donald Duck, Ibsen, and The Lone
Ranger, Sarah Bernhardt, Poodles
Hanneford, Lunt and Fontanne, Betty
Grable, Rex and Wild, and Eleanora
Duse. You don't understand them
all, you don't like them all, why
should you? The Theater's for
everybody - you included, but not
exclusively - so don't approve or
disapprove. It may not be your
Theater, but it's Theater of
somebody, somewhere.

Actually, I think it's kind of a good idea to do these reality shows, especially for these kind of pre-packaged shows like Grease and Joseph. 1. You get audience interest from the show. 2. You get word of mouth for unknown stars. 3. In the case of Joseph it could mean some good beefcake if the guys auditioning for Joseph have to take off their shirts like he does in the show.
Any claims that this cheapens or makes the process too commercial would just be silly as these shows are already pretty cheap and commercial.

"Grease is something everyone knows and loves."
Not so sure about loves...
Also, where would they play in US and UK?
