I must admit, even being an unabashed fan of 'The Adding Machine' (also by composer Josh Schmidt) I was not sure what to make of a musical adapted from George Bernard Shaw's 'Candida.'
But 'A Minister's Wife,' being performed at Writer's Theatre in suburban Chicago (Glencoe, IL) is that rare musical indeed: one that examines the impossible complexities of human emotions with the same detail and passionate language as classic drama. It of course owes a large debt to Shaw's original, but he is matched by the virtousity of the cast and creative team in Glencoe--most notably the ravishing and sensual score by Mr. Schmidt.
Quite simply, this 90 minutes in the theatre gives me overwhelming faith for the future of musical theatre.
Be warned though, that as in Shaw's original, 'Minister's Wife' challenges simplistic perceptions of love and marriage, and offers no easy answers. But how glorious, I say, to find a musical that seeks (and succeeds!) to be as rich and lofty in it's ideas as any play.
My friend and I were moved to tears and eagerly anticipate a cast recording. For anyone around in the Chicago for the next month, it is a MUST SEE. For the many of you in New York, I pray for an off-Broadway transfer in the season to come.

Since CANDIDA is one of my favorite plays, it's nice to hear that the adaptation works - hopefully, a NY run is in its future!
