I was perusing John Kenrick's website today doing research for a show, & here's what the noted expert & lecturer on musicals (stage, screen, TV, cabaret) wrote about MAC, long before Stephen Holden and Adam Feldman more recently made their comments about MAC:
"Several showcase cabaret owners formed The Manhattan Association of Cabarets to distribute annual awards, but MAC has amounted to little more than a small-time mutual congratulation society. Few pay attention to the MAC awards (except as a butt of several jokes on TV's Will and Grace) and no one has yet found that winning one boosted their career. As one friend put it after winning his third MAC award, 'At least if they gave me a subway token I could say that it got me somewhere.'"
