What's the most riveting, moving, and well-acted production in Chicago right now?
Well I haven't seen everything, but I do see a lot, and after last night I can recommend nothing as highly as A STEADY RAIN, the two-man cop drama currently at the Royal George.
Excerpts from my review:
...Above all else, Keith Huff’s new play is achingly honest and believable, and by the end, an emotional punch in the gut.
...about two-thirds of the way through this 100 minute play, I found myself so moved that I suddenly convulsed in sobs and clutched on to my companion for dear life.
...Portraying such a volatile range of emotions during the piece, it is a small miracle that these men are left with enough energy to stand and bow after a performance, let alone two in one day.
...With ‘Steady Rain,’ an evening in the theatre is gripping, authentic, and deeply moving—you couldn’t ask for more.

I saw this based on the recommendations here and the reviews and I wish I could agree with you all. I found it cliched, melodramatic, extremely overacted (I could see the actor getting the drool ready during his big breakdown scene) and lacking a clear focus or theme.
There were some walk outs the night I saw it and some eye rolling on the way out.
I would call it a decent first draft of a show that really needs a lot of work.
