I saw it tonight as well...I too was going to say I didn't feel it dragged at all, totally agree I couldn't believe it was intermission but checked the time and was like oh, wow. In fact, I always used to be more of a musicals snob, but recently have discovered that straight plays can be wonderful too...though those I have seen lately, which include both Pillowman and Doubt which I loved...to me dragged at the beginning, or it just took a while to get me into it. I can't explain why, but I was into this from the get-go.
Em, you also made a good point in Taye's difficult monologues to the audience, also something I thought was great.
Cast is a great unit and everyone ups their energy and plays off each other.
And while I wouldn't say I was shocked at the outcome of the whodunit, I wouldn't exactly say it was predictable. Certainly before seeing the play I wouldn't have thought it turned out that way, takes a different spin on a story that has been told many times.
*SPOILER*
What I mean by that is well I was thinking about this...like the Times article said pointing out racism not only in whites but blacks between each other, I think it's a very interesting point that isn't usually examined in these kinds of plays. And another thing that stuck w/ me was the white captain who was so sure it was the white men and wanted so badly for them to be arrested...usually a character like that would be an angry black man blaming it on the whites, so I found it to be a very interesting choice to make the white man the one to play that part. Also really liked the relationship between the two captains.
*END SPOILER*
Anyway, good show that I definitely recommend. Saw Taye twice on the street(missed him come out) and couldn't say a word. Go me.
"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli
