A Sound in "Small Mouth Sounds"

I saw "Small Mouth Sounds" in SF at ACT;'s Strand Theater Sunday afternoon. Truly wonderful and highly recommended.
Question - for those who've seen it and/or are actors.
There's a moment, in which the remaining lesbian member of the couple, at night emits a quiet, hollow sound. Something between a sob, a muffled wail and a moan.
Not to get too personal here, but I know that sound. I made it one evening about a decade ago but have never heard it before or since, and never in public. Is this a common, human, sound? Could this be a scripted stage direction? It certainly was deeply affecting to me.
