A Way to Save Urinetown

I truly hate to say it, but there is no way that Urinetown is going to move. I doubt that was even a consideration to begin with.
Urinetown received some "consessions" at the Henry Miller that made it fairly economical to run. At another house, those concessions would not be available. Moves are costly; and with the traditionally slow period of January-March, it would be prohibitive to move the show.
I love UT; it's a shame; but at least they're going out with people being sorry to see the show go rather than thinking it lingered too long. They done good; they done PROUD! And I've got front row seats for the last performance on January 18.

Posted: 11/18/03 at 10:45amSadly the producers have no intention of moving it, but it's nice to know it's going to go out with a good cast.

Posted: 11/18/03 at 1:08pmwhy wait for the plymouth when the cort is already open? i'd bet that either (a) they spoke w/ the shuberts & it didn't work or (b) they really are ready to call it quits in any case.

Posted: 11/18/03 at 1:13pmSo where will they all "go" now? I hope there is a lot more "yellow" in all of their lives. They deserve it.

Posted: 11/18/03 at 3:30pmFor the last time, I have a friend in the cast, and the producers NEVER considered moving the show. It would cost millions.

why dont they move it into the cort, with bobbi boland just vacating it. or the music box when it becomes available after cat on a hot tin roof ends its run
re: re: re: re: re: re: A Way to Save Urinetown#8
Posted: 11/18/03 at 3:42pmBecause, again, it is TOO EXPENSIVE.

The producers did consider a move, with one particular house in mind. It's not exactly correct to say that the producers NEVER considered a move. That's just not true.

Posted: 11/18/03 at 3:52pmIt doesn't really matter if they considered it or not, it is not moving...
re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: A Way to Save Urinetown#11
Posted: 11/18/03 at 4:36pmMaybe they could move it...?
re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: A Way to Save Urinetown#12
Posted: 11/18/03 at 4:50pmYeah, they could MOVE it!

all this arguing over a movement? just get the Milk of Magnesia out!
Seriously, wouldn't it sell the tour a bit more if it was still on in NYC? if the road company is struggling now to attract audiences, when the home drain gets clogged, who will ante up for a paytoilet in Peoria!?!?

And now the Longacre is available too.
Anyway, I love Urinetown for what it is. It's not a traditional Broadway musical and it seems so well suited for the Henry Miller, I just don't think it would fit into one of the fancier Broadway houses. The same observation was made about Taboo.

Posted: 11/18/03 at 5:56pmyeah, the quasi-"environmental" setting definitely fits the show, as does CABARET's. And DONKEY SHOW's.

Posted: 11/18/03 at 8:41pmI'm sure it would move if concessions were made available at a few of the hard sell not too desirable theatres such as the Cort, Belasco or Longacre instead of them sitting there dark for months.

Posted: 11/19/03 at 7:50amaltereog, even if they gave them free rent they'd say no, the producers are fine with it closing at this time.

Posted: 11/20/03 at 1:48pmyeah, i think it already made back its initial investment. Moving and running could put it back in a deficit. Good business sense is to let it finish at a profit, but i'm not sure what that will do for the tour.
