A little Night Music

What actualy happened to this production being directed by Trevor Nunn and starring Glenn Close?

re: A little Night Music

I know for a fact that Glenn Close is no longer attached, but I have no idea what went down. Maybe they realized that she is totally WRONG for the role on EVERY level...

re: A little Night Music

Maybe now they'll wise up and ask Annette Bening if she's interested. I'm SO ready for that.

Annette Bening as Desiree?

*fans self*

If that happens, I will surely think I've died and gone to Heaven!

If we were to dip into the Broadway pool, though, both Victoria Clark or Michele Pawk would be wonderful...

re: A little Night Music

I want Victoria Clark for Charlotte, or even Marin Mazzie... and Kelli O'Hara for Anne (but she's a little busy now).

How about we have an "American Beauty" reunion with Kevin Spacey as Frederik?

I really hope that was a joke...

re: A little Night Music

You don't think he could play Frederik?

re: A little Night Music

Desiree doesn't require a superb singer, so I think they could get a number of great stars to get people into the show. Bening would be my number 1 choice. She can sing too, right?

re: A little Night Music

what about the transfer of judi from the london production!!!! that was always my dream.

re: A little Night Music

Judi Dench was absolutely wonderful but alas that production was 10 years ago re: A little Night Music and perhaps Dame Judi may not be right for the part now.

re: A little Night Music

Why does everybody think Glenn Close was wrong for this role? Desiree is not supposed to be a strong singer, and I believe Close is a great actress but I'd like to hear why people were against her playing this role.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

re: A little Night Music

Because her singing voice is not only technically not good, it's grating and unpleasant to boot.

re: A little Night Music

I dislike her "Send in the Clowns" on the Sondheim at Carnegie Hall DVD immensely, so hopefully the next actress they choose will be a better choice for the role.

re: A little Night Music

I'd love Dench to play Madame Armfeldt, but she'd never do it. The part is too small for her (valuable) time.

Desiree & Frederik need to be somewhere around 45 (or at least be able to look that age).

i agree that annette would be a good choice, but not the best. meryl i think would be luminous.

re: A little Night Music

Would Glen Close be able to combine the earthiness with the command of high comedy that is essential for the role? I'd be interested to see - she tends to come over as little to self- aware and aloof for the part.

I'm interested in the idea of Annette Bening. You need an actress primarily - however I'm not sure that any of the other names mentioned so far could pull it off.

I'd like Emma Thompson - just to hear that dirty laugh again on stage.....

Great suggestion!! And Thompson can sing.

re: A little Night Music

Emma would be a great choice too!

Desiree needs to have WARMTH to her. Close and even Streep sometimes are lacking that (at least on screen). Streep makes up for her lack of warmth with quirkiness and humor when she needs to.

Not enough here. Desiree needs warmth and charm.

re: A little Night Music

I never thought of Annette Benning. But I think it would be a great idea.

Lee Remick was to have done it years ago, here in L.A. but became ill. I keep thinking that she was a great choice.

But for me.. Bernadette Peters could really give Gynis Johns a run for her money...

re: A little Night Music

Desiree needs a European actress sensibility about her. Glenn Close only plays California soccer mom.

What about Catherine Zeta-Jones? Possibly too young?

re: A little Night Music

Gov -- totally agree with Glenn's "Send in the clowns" . . . . it was just boring. If you don't sing the song well (and she didn't) you have to at least act the crap out of it. All she seemed to do is close her eyes a lot and shake her head back and forth. I LOVE Glenn, but she did nothing for me with that song.

re: A little Night Music

glenn close only plays "califonia soccer mom"?

gee, i never thought her characters in FATAL ATTRACTION, SUNSET BOULEVARD and 101 DALMATIONS would be considered soccer moms...
#25

re: A little Night Music

Glenn Close's "South Pacific" was the most boring thing I've ever seen, largely due to her performance.

FATAL ATTRACTION - mad soccer mom

SUNSET BOULEVARD - old soccer mom suffering from dementia, who should be in a nursing home

101 DALMATIONS - drunk soccer mom
