Has any one performer ever won all the theatre awards -- Outer Critic's Circle, Drama League, Drama Desk, Theatre World and Tony --in one season? Updated On: 5/18/04 at 09:09 AM

Didn't Harvey Fierstein get the DISTINGUISHED PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR award for the 2002-2003 season, given by the DRAMA LEAGUE ? I thought there is only one individual performance award given by the group each year. Updated On: 5/18/04 at 10:56 AM

I think Lea Salonga swept the awards for MISS SAIGON.

Oh, you're right. Does the fact that she was nominated for a Fred Astaire award count? :)

But actually, if you're talking about Fierstein, he got an OBIE, Theatre World Award, 2 Drama Desks, and 2 Tonys for Torch Song Trilogy. And last year he got the OCC, Drama Desk, Drama League, and Tony- everything but the Theatre World Award- for Hairspray.

Lea Salonga got all of them but the Drama League award for Miss Saigon, plus an Olivier. Audra MacDonald also got the whole bunch except the Drama League award for Carousel. I think Michael Crawford got them all except the Theatre World award for Phantom. And...that's all I can think of. Updated On: 5/18/04 at 12:40 PM

To discuss "sweeping" all the major theatre awards in one season, one should only include the Outer Critics, Drama Desk, and the Tony.

The Drama League should not be included bc there is only one Distinguished Performance award per season. (Although this year they did present a special one to Donna Murphy, in addition to winner Hugh Jackman.)

The Astaire awards are for Best Dance performance and the Theatre World awards are for debut performances.

Well, that's the point of the question, I guess- how many debut performances were so exceptional they got every award including the tough Drama League one? And obviously the answer kec is going for is none, since Hugh Jackman will probably pull that off this year and it sounds cooler if there's no precedent. :)

Oh, now I have a question. Anyone know when the Fred Astaire awards are awarded? Are there nominations? How does it work? Updated On: 5/18/04 at 04:31 PM

Thanks Plum... I actually wasn't thinking in terms of debut performances, but the original question did concern Hugh Jackman -- someone on another board I'm on asked if anyone had ever won all five of those awards. I figured someone here would know the answer...re: A question regarding the Theatre Awards

Whether or not Hugh is the first one to garner all five awards, the fact that he will likely get all five is indeed a lovely thought...

Digressing a little --

Did anybody else win both the TONY and the OLIVIER for the same role, other than Lea? Michael Crawford for the Phantom, perhaps? What about Jonathan Pryce for Miss Saigon?

Also, who have won the Drama League in their debut roles ( other than Hugh )?

Jo- I believe the guy who played Jud in the recent revival of Oklamhoma got both the Olivier and the Tony.

Yes, Shuler Hensley did :)

He is a very good actor. I've read that he was trained as an opera singer, too.
