THRILL ME Review

Since May 26, 2005 - The York Theatre Company has been holding onto a true dramatic gem of musical theatre. “Thrill Me” is the true story of gay lovers, Richard Loeb and Nathan Leopold Jr. who kidnapped and murdered a child in the early 1920s for kicks and famously became known as “the thrill killers.” The plot of this two person musical may cover the months before the crime, the investigation, trial, final fate of the two men and beyond; but what makes “Thrill Me” stand leaps and bounds above most other Off-Broadway shows is its organically rich layering and texture of the music, lyrics, and acting. Stephen Dolginoff (the triple threat who does each of the aforementioned tasks) and Shonn Wiley (an up and coming talent beyond his years, late of Papermill’s “Ragtime) are perfect in every sense of the word as Leo & Loeb! What is not so perfect is that “Thrill Me” will be closing next Sunday, August 21 and anyone who has yet to see it should RUN, NOT WALK to witness this theatrical masterpiece.

There is an existing recording of THRILL ME. They sell it at the York Theater.

I'm glad to hear Shonn Wiley is doing a good job. I thought Doug Kreeger was exceptional as Richard Loeb.

Well...to each their own...but,

I thought Shonn Wiley gave one of the most hauntingly chilling performances I have seen on a New York stage. What a Wonderful gem of a show!

I really was interested in seeing Wiley in another show. I saw him in Ragtime and he was PHOENOMINAL. However, I couldnt bring myself to sit through Dolginoff's lifeless performance again.

ugh. thank the musical theatre gods, it's closing.

the things an audience settles for these days. bland lyrics. annoyingly repetitious melodies. poor characterization that's sacrificed for banal storytelling. And to top it all off, the megalomaniac book writer/composer/lyricist/leading man thinking he can carry off even one of those tasks well.

Doug Kreeger was amazing in the role. You can catch him in the Fringe show Swimming Upstream.

"I'm learning to dig deep down inside and find the truth within myself and put that out. I think what we identify with in popular music more than anything else is when someone just shares a truth that we can relate to. That's what I'm searching for in my music." - Ron Bohmer

"I broke the boundaries. It wasn't cool to be in plays- especially if you were in sports & I was in both." - Ashton Kutcher

This show reminds me of 'Pacific Overtures' in that nobody is lukewarm about it; you either loved it or hated it. Count me in the former category. I thought Doug Kreeger was magnificent but I do have to admit that Shonn Wiley is (almost) equally superb. I originally thought Stephen Dolginoff was too tentative in the role of Nathan Leopold but he has grown into the role and is quite good. I believe anyone can get the $20 day-of-show rush tix so, for the price of a movie and popcorn, go see make up your own mind.
