I'm competing in KCACTF region III as an Irene Ryan nominee next week.
Is anyone else going to ACTF?
Is anyone else competing?

Going to be at Region II at Muhlenberg starting tomorrow. Anyone else?
Also, a show I did is going for the Night of Scenes.
So if anyone is going to Region III, they definitely have a chance to see me shine on stage!
:)
*bump!*
Our ACTF is in Florida this year, which is going to be freakin expensive! I am supose to go to be a scene partner for one of the Irene Ryan competitors but I'll have to see if I can pay my way first before committing to it.

I'm not sure what region we are...BUT...I'm going to Arkansas in February with Sam Houston State. We're performing Smokey Joe's Cafe.
We're going to Region I (Providence, RI) with our show, "A Mouthful of Birds" by Caryl Churchill. SO excited!
I'm very excited for you ~ff~, and you all... Break a leg at the ACTF and Irene Ryan!
Break a log and have an awesome time! I was a finalist 2 years ago when I was in college...FINE...it was more than two years ago. But it was really fun. More important than anything though is that you have a great time and get to know other people from other schools and stay in touch-those are going to be your first circle of friends when and if you move to NYC.
Thanks for the advice, Jamie!
I'll make sure to write down names and numbers.
(and not just of the straight guys there)
I haven't been before, but I've heard that my school gets really into it.
They all wake up at 6:00 every morning and go to all of the seminar-things.
They see ALL the plays.
And then they get the names and numbers of as many professors from other schools as possible to use as references later.
I'm not sure I'll be able to keep up!
Bump again!
Come on guys! I can't be the only one on this board going in region III!!!
flowery-have fun with the kids from Oakland University! They're from my school!!! If I weren't saving money for our trip to New York I'd be there partying with you guys!! Have fun and a break a leg!!!!!!!!!! I'm sure you'll do great!

Do any of you young'uns even know who Irene Ryan was? She spent most of her career doing radio and regional theatre until this very elegant woman was cast as Granny Clampett on "The Beverly Hillbillies" and she became a household name. She made a fortune doing the show and after the run ended she appeared in PIPPIN and was nominated for a Tony. She died during the run of PIPPIN and left her money to a scholarship fund. Kudos, Irene! Updated On: 1/4/05 at 09:38 PM
I did know that, Logan, but thanks for spreading the info!
Actually, I had a really bad scare today on this subject.
Turns out, my director forgot to register all the Irene Ryan candidates from my school.
Thank goodness my friend and I thought to check!
The deadline was DEC 21!!!
I think we've sorted the whole thing out now, though.
I should still be able to compete.
Wish me luck!
Excuse my ignorance, but I live in Seattle. What are the ACTF and Irene Ryan Competition?
bjivie2: Ashland, Oregon, where I will be too!
I was already planning on scraping together the money for ACTF, but I guess now I'm gonna be participating in a staged-reading for one of the playwrighting competitions, so I'm excited about that. I just hope my money is gonna hold out
ACTF (aka KCACTF) is the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.
There are 8 regions in the USA.
Basically, colleges can have professors from other colleges come and give feedback on their productions.
If productions are awesomely incredibly, they may get an invitation to take their entire show to regional festival (in the case of a small college like mine that would not be able to afford taking a full production on the road, the show can be invited to take 15 minutes of the performance to the Night of Scenes.)
If there is an outstanding acting performance in a production, then the visiting professor has the ability to nominate an actor for the Irene Ryan National Acting Scholarship.
If you are nominated, you prepare two scenes (with a partner) and a monologue to bring to festival.
There are four nominees from my school going (nominated over the last two semesters), and I'm one of them.
There are other competitions and things there as well. There are seminars to attend, and shows to see. It's really rather an exciting week for theatre people.
And if people are blow-your-mind-unbelievable, then they might get to bring their designs/productions/scenes/monologues to National Festival at the Kennedy Center.

My theatre department applied for a grant from our Center for Women's International Leadership, because the play we're taking to the night of scenes is very multicultural (it's about real life human right's defenders from around the world). We got all the money we asked for, and this year the whole trip is paid for! (of course, we're only going to the next state over so our fees weren't overwhelming to begin with, but it's still great to not have to work all break.)
Sorry, we are from Region 6. We have 3 actors and lots of student designs going. Actually my husband designed the set for ours. Our show was "The Goat or who is Sylvia" by Albee. We got two nominations to go on, but weren't chosen when it came down to it. I love ACTF. Do you guys have state festivals? We do, and I have heard we are some of the only ones that do. They are so much fun, and regionals are fun too. You learn so much. You get to see 8 plays in 4 days where we go. LOL. I love it!
