Singin' in the Rain will be near the top of the list because it made the top 10 of 100 greatest movies of all time list for AFI. West Side Story was the only other Musical to make the top 50 of the 100 greatest films and that was at 41 (although i supposed Snow White counts, and that was at 49).

The Sound of Music was 55 on the 100 greatest list Fantasia also made the top 60 at 58.

those were the musicals that made the Top 100 Greatest, so one would expect to see them in the top 25 Movie Musicals

There are also some "fringe movies" that sometimes get counted as musicals, and sometimes not... like "The Red Shoes," "Amadeus" "The Great Ziegfeld," "Fame" and "Going My Way." I would also add the recent "Ray" and "Walk the Line" to that list. Any bio-pic, really, that tells a behind-the-scenes story of a musician or performer. Better add "The Rose" and "Coal Miner's Daughter." A whole slew of others.

To me these are all stories told with the help of their music... not necesarily musicals as defined by the genre. Nobody's breaking out in song or dance, unless they're rehearsing or performing numbers on a real stage. "Cabaret" also falls into this genre, but because it comes from a traditional stage musical (that did have people breaking into songs that weren't part of the actual "show"), the film is usually considered a musical.

Of course THAT bounces everything back to the age-old question of "what defines a musical?"

I wonder if they'll get into any of this with this AFI thing?

Probably too heady for the general public... or even many of us!

Y'all are giving no credit to Fred & Ginger. Top Hat will be in the top 10, or I'll just die.

"It's true, by the way, that Sondheim loves the South Park movie (and South Park in general..during Frogs rehearsal. he would watch runthroughs in a Mister Hanky t-shirt). Personally, I would love to see the South Park musical in the top 100. I would much prefer it to the embalmed My Fair Lady, that will probably make the top 10. "

THAT is why I am madly in love with Mr. Sondheim.

Now, back on the topic. Granted I'm slightly bias, aka avid Judy Garland fan but #1 should be "A Star is Born". It is the closest to perfection a movie musical will ever get!

I wrote this earlier in the thread, but actually The Wizard of Oz was the first musical on that list at number 6 followed by Singin'in the Rain at number 10.

I think that Singin' in the Rain would be ranked #1, with Wizard of Oz at a close second and West Side Story will be third. That's just what my gut is telling me.

The UK had the same sort of poll last year on channel 4 and grease was named the best movie musical of all time.

Just got back. Had a fun night. I had never been to this kind of thing at the bowl so it was great to hear these classic songs being sung with the original voices and a live orchestra. Of course I had a running commentary from the lovely people sitting behind me(not to mention everyone around me felt the need to sing all the songs). I was a little dispointed in some of the list, but I kinda figured I would be. I was sad that West Side Story was not number one, but eh, I'll live. Oh and apparentley Joel Gray was somewhere in the audience.

Here's the list.

Not surprised that none of my beloved Grable or Faye musicals made the cut - not even THE GANG'S ALL HERE. I would have put SWING TIME in there for sure. And no Garland-Rooney musicals? And no GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES? And no CALL ME MADAM? And Cripes Almighty - NO "COVER GIRL"?!

But I was really shocked that nowhere on the list is LOVE ME TONIGHT.

"Nah. Too good."

That's a fairly decent list, although I would have done away with Grease and given the spot to South Park or even Sweet Charity.

I'm a little surprised that West Side Story beat out Wizard of Oz for the #2 spot. And I'm very surprised that Beauty and the Beast and Moulin Rouge were on the list.

AFI makings lists about as useless as VHI's stupid lists. Does anyone even care? By the by, Moulin Rouge will be gone the day Dreamgirls is released.

I'm surprised Willy Wonka isn't listed.
