I came across this old article/interview with Heather Headley where she mentions that Disney was originally considering some of the top R&B stars for the role.
I guess what we are seeing today is what they'd originally intended.

Thank you for that cause people seem to think otherwise. Deborah Cox is truly magnificent in the role of Aida. Her singing and acting is incredible night after night.I thoroughly enjoy seeing her performances and will be going back time and again.
