I loved that show. Saw it with the original German cast in Essen and a few years later with a slightly changed cast and everytime I saw this show, I thought it was great and the songs very strong! I loved "A step too far", "Easy as life" and "I know the truth", I could listen to them everyday!

One of my all time favorite's. Elton's BEST score IMO. Saw it 5 times at the Palace with the OBC. The cast was Brilliant as was the set design, costumes , all of it blew me away at the time. Heather was a knock-out and Adam gave an outstanding performance. I would see this show today, with the right cast. I listen to the CD at least once a week. It should have been nominated and Won for Best Musical IMO !

I agree with many of the other's opinions - easily Elton John's best Broadway score (with the exception the horrendous "Like Father like Son", "Another Pyramid" and "How I know you.")
The cast album is highly re-playable, with the reprise of "My Strongest Suite" being one of my favorite songs.
I saw the show 3 or 4 times with various cast members. The show was a delight to watch and staged very well. (With the exception of the extended dance numbers in 2 of the songs I listed above.)
One negative I remember is that there were odd "gaps" or "pauses" in the delivery of the dialogue. It was almost as if they expected audience reaction - but didn't get one. Each time I saw it, I took note of the pauses (that were always in the same places and always got the same non-reaction) - specifically, the pool scene with Amneris. Some of her jokes in that scene landed with a thud ("I'm keeping her!!!!") But then when she launched into "My Strongest Suite" it more than made up for it.
The whole visual take on the show was odd yet interesting. The set was pretty stark and barren... obviously to suggest the desert... but it was designed/colored like a cross between Egypt and Outer Space. Laser beams, palm tree sillouettes, star curtains, marble throne, neon closet organizer boxes with wig heads (to suggest Amneris' closet,) a large blue drop on the floor to suggest a stream etc.
That having been said - the final "tomb" enclosure scene was an amazing visual, and I'd give anything to see it again.
