On my two hour road trip I also listened to Unsuspecting Hearts with Alice Ripley and Em Skinner.
Does anyone else have this cd??? If not, get your asses down to the music store, or log onto amazon.com NOW! hee hee
Alice belts notes that aren't humanly possible! And for all you out there that don't be;ive Alice can belt, this cd will SURELY change your mind.
"She's Gone" cut from Side Show, is Alice's tour-de-force, two minute, growl em, knock em, sock em, bang em up, belt fest with an INSANE, ridiculous ending that'll leave you wondering "what the hell just happened.?"
"Losing Track of time" is from Hunter Foster's Summer of 42 is Alice's soft and warm song that turns powerfully emotional to it's belting climax.
"Unsuspecting Hearts" from Carrie the Musical has Alice and Ems singing this exceptional song from a not so exceptional musical. Alice tackles the higher harmonies with dramtic force and belting intentsity.
"Solid Silver Platform Shoes" and "Last Duet" is Alice and Emily just belting andf tearing the stuff up for 4 minutes. Sounding like two belting, big, black divas from Dreamgirls!
If you also get a chance to hear Alice and Ems sing "Celebrate" from "Elegies for Angels Punks and Raging Queens" you will indeed be blown away by how loud, and insanely powerful Alices' "Little" voice can actualy be!!
Alice IS my favorite belter, but I'm constantly being told she doesn't belt.
Any comments on this, these songs, or Alice not being a belter?

I have the Unsupsecting Hearts CD, as well as Duets, Emily Skinners CD, Alice's CD, and SideShow...Alice is marvelous on every single one of them. She has a voice like no other, and is able to go effortlessly from those high notes to a glorious belt. She's Gone is one of my favorite songs on all the CD's...It makes me wonder why it was cut from the show.
And, on one of the nine million Sondheim CD's, there is a track of Alice singing Another Hundred People, which is another of my fav's...She tackles it very well...
I am looking forward to another CD from Alice and Emily...I know Alice is working on another CD of original songs, yet, I hope she does one with a few show tunes...I need her to record Meadowlark...lol...

Who says Alice Ripley can't belt, and more importantly, why aren't they having their hearing checked?
IMHO, this woman is one of the best young female belters on B'way right now. She and Sutton Foster and Carolee Carmello. And maybe Marin Mazzie.
If I could belt Another Hundred People like Alice Ripley, I would be one happy dame.

I've heard Alice sing "Meadowlark" at on eof her concerts, she did play Genevieve as well, a couplee of years ago.
Alice is tops, on my list. She can sing anything, and I defnitely prefer her belt over her soprano any day.
I love her on
"She's Gone"
"West End Avenue" (Stephen Schwart Album)
"Another 100 People" (Sondheim Collection)
THE SIDE SHOW CD
"Solid Dilver Platform Shoes"
"I Know HIm So Well"
"My Own Best Friend"
"Unsuspecting Hearts"
"Celebrate"
"Last Duet"
"Losing Track of Time"
and countless others

I would so LOVE to hear her Meadowlark! Betty Buckley, of course, does it the best, but I also really liked Liz Callaway singing it.
Sorry, Al Dente. Is it safe to assume that you're not an Alice lover. :)

bdwaybabie, wait, have u heard Patti LuPone sing Meadowlark? She's the one who originated it! Yes the role WAS written for Betty Buckley and that's why she sings it at her concerts but they ended up casting Patti instead. Patti sings it best on "The Baker's Wife" cd. She also sings it live on her Patti Live cd, but it's a little intense and she belts the entire thing insetad of having levels.
Betty sing it great, never heard Liz, don't like Susan Egan's I also think it's lowered. Alice's Meadowlark couls be better, but she did sing it after singing an hour's worth of songs. :)

I wish I had the OCR of The Baker's Wife! I love Patti, and don't mind that her voice sometimes lacks subtlety. Love her dynamism.
If I am not mistaken, Liz Callaway's version of Meadowlark is on her On and Off Broadway CD...I haven't heard Susan Egan's yet.
BTW...are you divarobbie on ATC?

Divarobb is a friend of mine and I assure you, if he was posting right now, he'd be singing the praises of Emily, not Alice.
But I digress.
I do love Alice to death, and have owned Unsuspecting Hearts since it was released, but a BLACK woman she is not. Emily is definitely a black woman trapped in a white girl's body, but Alice is as white as they come (not that that's a bad thing).
I enjoy Alice in Losing Track of Time... I think that's a great track. :)
And I also own Elegies...
Sorry, still not impressed by Alice's "big black woman belt." I'd much rather hear her sing something like "Losing Track of Time" any day. To be quite honest, I actually prefer Alice's original songs to her showtunes any day. That's just me, though. :) I'm really looking forward to her next CD!

lmao! Wow...I had never thought of them like that before!
I know both Alice and Emily have solo CD's and I'd love to get a copy of each. Also, Elegies sounds really wonderful.

She has three solos:
She's Gone (cut from Side Show)
Losing Track of Time (Summer of 42)
My White Knight (Music Man)
Emily also has three solos, and the rest of the tracks are duets. :) They don't have any solos on Duets.

ok miss daiy hilton, you ARE correct, Ems IS the one who is a big blonde and beautiful black woman trapped inside the body of a white girl and will always be! ha ha , but what I'm saying about Alice's voice, although Ems is sensational, is that Alice's sound is so...unique. Don't get me wrong, Ems rocks my world, but I prefer Alice. Always have

Um, I didn't say Alice wasn't fabulous or that you don't have reason to prefer her (besides, WHY does it always have to be a competition between the two??). I'm just saying I don't see anything "black" about Alice.
Just as I would say I don't see anything "edgy" about Emily, a quality that Alice certainly possesses. Just a difference in type.
No need to defend your adoration for Alice... we all know it's there.
Just wear it proudly and don't get defensive.

Posted: 8/18/03 at 3:02pmThe thing that amazes me the most about Alice is that she has a 100% diffrent voice on her solo CD (Everything's Fine). Thats probably why some might say she does not belt. Also, I think my favorite song is "Tunnel Of Love" when she says "I Want Mine....". It also has something to do with Emily, because I cought the New Years Eve show and saw an understudy for Emily, and really did not like it as much. She did not blend well with the understudy who's name escapes me but she was some skinny blonde.
