Watching CNN and scrolling on its marquee was news that ALL SHOOK UP set ticket prices for its balcony at $19.55 since its set in 1955 and thats how much prices were.
They also said its the cheapest non-discounted ticket for a Broadway musical.

Posted: 11/30/04 at 6:16pmIt's a fact. I've never sat in the balcony at the Palace but hey, it's better to be in the balcony than sitting at home. :) I can't wait for 'All Shook Up'.

Just a slight correction -- the $20 top for Broadway shows didn't happen until the 70s. The top ticket price in 1955 was actually less than $10 (not counting scalper's prices for hit shows). I believe Promises, Promises was the first to go to $15 (for Friday and Saturday night shows in 196
and I believe "A Chorus Line broke the $20 plateau in 1975.

Posted: 11/30/04 at 6:41pmI remember seeing "Evita" for $30 in 1980 and thinking that was expensive (especially since I was still in high school). I was so afraid to tell my parents how much I spent on the ticket.

Posted: 11/30/04 at 6:46pmAnd I remember paying $35 for Dreamgirls seats in 1982 -- it's outrageous that the top price has tripled in just 20 years -- that far outstrips the rate of inflation. And not only that, they've gotten rid of the cheap seats as well -- balcony seats went for as little as $5 as late as the early 80s. Now they have the nerve to charge as much as $65 for the last row of the balcony. GREEDY.

Posted: 11/30/04 at 7:22pmI couldn't agree Margo. If anything it turns people of from theater. It isn't to easy for some people to get $65 just to barely be in the theater. Even with discounts (which apply to orchestra seats) tickets are upwards of $55. It's terrible, but that's what happens when they try to cover shabby stories and flimsy songs with actors they pay $100 grand a week and million dollar sets.
