"‘I'll never experience anything like it again' Andrew Lloyd Webber went to New York last week to celebrate his musical 'Phantom of the Opera' becoming the longest-running show in Broadway history - taking over from the previous title-holder, his production of 'Cats'. Here, he presents his diary of an emotional occasion..."

He goes on to describe the event from his point of view.

One thing he said, I hope leeinlondon reads. He maintained on this board and others that Michael Crawford left The Woman in White because of some dissention with other cast members or because his role wasn't big enough or....whatever.

Weber says this:

"The afternoon is to be a mega-TV junket with the Phantom creative team, plus Michael Crawford, with whom I have a coffee beforehand. I am very glad to see him back to health - he really was poorly when he had to leave The Woman in White in the West End."

Hi Sally,

I loved the article. Thank you for posting the link. re: ALW Diary notes-POTO's big day

I adore ALW and his talent, and I found his diary very charming indeed. re: ALW Diary notes-POTO's big day

There is a curious paradox that no one can explain; Who understands the secret of the reaping of the grain, Who understands why spring is born out of winter's laboring pain, Or why we all must die a bit before we grow again. -from "The Fantasticks"

Forgot to say, I loved the 'teaser' about the novel ALW mentioned he'd just finished reading, and how perhaps it may be possible to turn it into a musical.

I also love ALW's sense of humour!

Peace and Love,

The novel---It could be anything. 'Spose he'll go for a Victorian novel again? Many of them (all?) have the advantage of being out of copyright.

No, he's said several times in recent interviews that he doesn't have the rights to the book he's thinking about adapting...

Love this ALW quote: re: ALW Diary notes-POTO's big day

Friday, Jan 6

Big interview day ahead. By lunchtime I am already bored answering "What is the secret of Phantom's success?" If I really knew, I'd have written another one.
