He said this:
ALW: "The 12th October 1971 should have been the happiest night of my life. I was 23 years old and a fairy tale was about to come true. An unknown British young man was to have his first musical premiered on Broadway.
...Never in my opinion was so wrong a production mounted of my work."
Anyone know what his beef was with it???
Tom O'Horgan was/is a very avant garde director. Like his direction of the original production of HAIR, his staging upstaged the material.
Webber should just retire somewhere because i am sock of him having a problem with everything.
Andrew, Retire to some far away location or take your time and write Sarah another musical.
Tom O'Horgan's production was gigantic and completely surreal. I think Webber wanted something smaller and more naturalistic. Fair enough. At any rate, most of the critics highly praised O'Horgan's work calling it "innovative" and "stunning." The production made money so ALW doesn't really have too much to be upset about.
