Was Anything Goes the Next to Normal of its time?
Anything Goes Done Right
I saw the show on Friday and I have to say that I adored it immensely. Sutton is pure magic and the dancing is absolutely thrilling. :)
Ben Brantley really ate Sutton Foster out with his review, which I thought was way off.
Someone posted earlier about the show lacking energy, and I agree: it felt like the cast was just going through the motions when I saw the show shortly after it opened.
Foster's singing was subpar: I don't understand why she straight-toned so many of the passages and why there was a lethargy to the numbers that were supposed to be frenetic almost. Maybe it's the tempo the conductor chose, but I felt the numbers dragged.
Laura Osnes sang the best out of the cast and I was happily surprised to see her do so well after seeing her tackle Nellie Forbush formidably at The Vivian Beaumont.
The other cast members' voices weren't as captivating as Osnes's, unfortunately. I would have loved to have heard THE GYPSY IN ME sung with better technique and intonation.
