I agree. Purlie is a much better show.

Applause is a perfect example of a show that tells a familiar story and adds nothing new in the retelling. It is a story that was near-perfect the first time it was told and didn't need any rehashing even though it was theatre, not film and a musical rather than non-musical. It didn't need to happen.
There is nothing in the show that we didn't already know going in.
Same thing with any number of shows since. Big comes to mind.
But, if you'll allow me to play devil's advocate here - isn't one of the reasons we take familiar material and turn it into a musical, so that new generations can be introduced to it in a different form? I agree that we (us "older" folk who were fans of the movie) already knew the story behind applause, but its still an interesting show and I, for one, was glad they made a musical out of it (albeit not the best show in the world, it still had captivating performances and some good ensemble numbers, as stated previously in this thread).
Put Showgirls on the stage and add some songs and you would have yet another Broadway retelling of the same story. That should bring in some new interesting audiences to Broadway.
eeesh...well - for camp value alone, I suppose it could work...yikes!
