You're seeing Max’s character Patrick, trying to keep some semblance of order, at the dinner party from hell!!

And Charles does look great ~ he's gets prettier every day.

I saw the first three previews last week and loved it. When Charles came out in that southern belle costume I just about died. He was so funny in that scene and then the following fox hunt. His Auntie Mame really grows on you...she's someone you'd like to know. Max has a wonderful comedic side to his acting too. Playing such a wide variety of characters he had a chance to show off his acting chops. Woohoo!...great job Max!

I saw yesterday's (Wednesday's) matinee of "Auntie Mame." The show got off to a slow start, but kept building momentum, with the second half becoming really rollicking and funny. At first, I was wishing Busch would be a bit more camp in the role, but I could see he wanted to pace himself, and get audiences to accept him as the character before he started to have broader fun with things. After Beauregard died by falling off the Matterhorn, Busch's Mame became more sharply campy--to wonderful effect. And those costumes! Busch must have had 20 costume changes (and 10 wig changes)--and they were all great. Many people in the (largely senior) audience didn't seem to know that a man was playing Mame until they got there and read the program! A woman next to me asked if I knew a man was Auntie Mame. "That's why I'm here!" I said. By the first intermission, Busch had won over what I felt was a largely skeptical audience, and there were rousing cheers at curtain call time. One unintentionally funny bit: at one point the wonderful Penny Fuller (as Vera Charles) went over to take a dust cloth off the bar cart in order to make a drink. Well, there was one rolling caster missing. The cart tilted precipitously and would have fallen over if Fuller did not have the presence of mind to grab hold of one end of the cart. Very quickly, a stagehand crawled on to replace the missing caster as the ever-professional Fuller continued with her lines, while holding the cart. And, yes, all you Max von Essen fans, he was cute and did well in his multiple roles. In fact, the entire cast was praiseworthy.
