The Academy is putting a restriction on Best Song so there cannot be more than 2 nominated songs per movie. They want to avoid a Dreamgirls/Enchanted-esque dominated evening in the category. It's grossly unfair to be suppress or limit the recognition of talent that a composer works so hard!! Your opinions?

I don't get why Playbill ran this story. It has nothing to do with Broadway.

yeah, i was debating whether or not to put this on the off-topic board but i figured people have put less related stuff on this board. it's still an issue worth discussing. i think playbill ran it because of Dreamgirls being a musical and Enchanted being all Disney.

I get why they ran it: movie-musicals tend to hog the spots. But if they're good songs...why not nominate them?

I'm up in the air on this one. I agree, composers should get recognition if their songs are better than other ones. But at the same time, one movie hogging all the spots really doesn't give fair showcase to other talents.

It's about damn time.

Now all they need is to make a much-needed, drastic revision of the Best Foreign Language Film category, and everything will be all right.

I don't like the limitation.

But I also don't like that no actor can be nominated twice in the same category for different movies.

If they gave TWO of the best (whatever category) performances of the year, then they should receive TWO nominations. Right now, they only get the one they got the most votes for.

They can still get two acting nominations in different categories... just not the same one.
