"Theatre has become has normal as going to the movies, do you get dressed up to go there?"
Um, no it hasn't? Where in the world would you get that idea?
Perhaps not for the vast majority of people, but speaking as someone who's been to the cinema once this year and to the theatre forty-eight times, I can confidently say that for some people, going to the theatre is *more* normal than going to the movies. "
I agree with Weez....with conditions. (grin)
My worthless two cents? Theater to me is an alive, amazing and incredible experience. It's not the norm to society as a whole, but to the precious bunches of us who really want something more than the norm. Something better. Something not lipsynched and something that doesn't have the same contrived plot like every movie I've seen over the past several months.
Those people onstage are busting their butts to take me away from my personal problems, my credit cards, my car payments and my deaths in the family. Just as they give me two and a half precious hours out of their lives, so do I want to reciprocate by looking presentable, by looking like I didn't just walk in off the street, off the beach or off the playground. I'm sure clothing isn't a distraction to any performer but to me it will always be a special occasion on some small level and I want to rise to the fashion occasion solely for myself.
To me, shorts and flip flops don't show the proper respect of any theatergoer, but then again, neither do constant talking, picture taking or cell phones going off. Ten years ago I might have said the same for the movie theaters, but how sad is it that this IS the norm for movie theaters. I'd be shocked if someone's Blackberry *didn't* go off or I *wasn't* distracted by texting.
My bottom line; show up in whatever you want to wear, short of the Emperors' new clothes! You spent more than $10 to get in, you must have some love for the experience. Sooner or later, the Broadway norm will be the movie theater norm and perhaps the performers won't want to perform anymore. Then we shall be in REAL trouble!!!

"Saying that people wearing shorts to the theater is the equivalent of the death of reasoned discourse is only slightly more laughable than saying that gay marriage will lead to people marrying livestock."
It's that pitiful comparison that demonstrates why reasoned discourse would be futile and completely wasted on the likes of you.

I think sweatpants are morally wrong
I was at the Metropolitan Room last week and someone was wearing sweats. I was appauled. That's, what I would consider, a nice venue.
I am "loser" too. I always wear shorts in the summer to the theater, but I wear a nice pair of plaid shorts with a polo and my ed hardy shoes. To me, that IS appropriate for the theater in the summer. Have you seen some people go. They wear like basic graphic tees that should be worn to a picnic that a show on Broadway.
