It never amazes me how the current crop of broadway stars take their job lightly
People are paying big bucks for Spamalot & yet the stars take off repeatedly at the drop of a hat. Many times we have seen understudies who were just as good or better than the original.
Theatergoers need to scale back their attending shows to send out a message to these malcontents
understudies most ofter are better at the part becuase the person with the role has been hired because he or she is a name that can be believable in the role. the understudy is the person with the talent but no name recognition who will most likely work harder for the role and bring more to it. It comes down to talent vs. appeal. This is obviosly aimed at those actors that this thread was started about. not all of them.
However, I don't think audiences should "boycott" the shows, as ticket sales are as slim as they are in this modern world. We need people to keep supporting broadway. The name actors who come from the film world are not used to doing a show over and over hundreds of times and trying new ways to keep it fresh. they are used to doing something take after take until they get it right, then they move on, never having to revisit it again. It always makes me laugh (and cringe) when stars come to broadway, and they all say the same thing- "Broadway's a lot harder than I thought it would be". Yeah- well get clue, get off your cushy west coast couch, and join the rest of the hardest working actors- IN THEATRE!! where it takes stamina and dedication and where the show DOES go on even when you are under the weather or, God forbid, tired. don't whine about it.
That's all for now, just thought I'd get that off my chest.
