I haven't posted much on here, though I always vow I'm going to. Well, here I go! Let's talk about Adam Guettel's canon. I was first introduced to Floyd Collins back in high school and found the score incredibly stunning. (I was later in a production here at school, so I am a little partial.) And Myths and Hymns [Saturn Returns] is so underrated; the recording has some amazing moments. Now everyone is familiar with him because of the well-deserved success of The Light in the Piazza, and I couldn't be happier. He played us a couple of Piazza songs back when he came to see our production of Floyd (and he sang "Through the Mountain, which is incredible), and I think Adam is one of musical theatre's most amazing voices today. What do you guys think? Particularly about his earlier stuff?
I'm a HUGE Floyd Collins fan -I love the score (a little less enthused about the book...but shhhhhh...) and I just got Myths and Hymns so I'm sure I'll have an opinion about it very soon.
And I mean, just check my avatar to see if I'm a Piazza fan :0)
mmmmm Adam Guettel, a genious. But I should stop drooling, betty's already claimed him.
Hahaha. I do love me some Adam Guettel. Has there ever been a man as handsome as he is talented?
I hadn't heard Adam Guettel's music until I saw Piazza 2 weeks before the Tonys. I've never fallen for a show so hard before. Piazza is the most gorgeous musical that makes me cry every single time. I haven't listened to Piazza for a couple weeks and I played it today. When "passeggiata" came on it was like I was hearing it for the first time, I couldn't stop smiling. I can't get over how beautiful this music is and how incredibly talented Mr.Guettel is.
After seeing and loving Piazza, I bought FC and M&H and couldn't believe how amazing they were. FC has such a different sound but once I got used to the fiddles and yodeling, I loved it. And he sings! His voice is so sexy on M&Y. Is there anything this man can't do?
As much as it might sound like I work for him, I assure you that I'm just a fan. I haven't even met him yet but I've been trying. I've seen Piazza 5 times so far and he hasn't been there but I hope to meet him at Matt's last performance.I just want to thank him in person for writing this music. I gaurantee that when I meet him I'll cry. Te adoro Adamo!
jimmy-We never did settle that kung fu battle at TKTS. :)
I'd love to discuss anything Guettel-related -- the topic is a little broad at the moment though. Anything specific we could get into?
Ourtime-Have you seen any regional productions of Floyd Collins?
Lincoln Center's library has the original production of Floyd in their library, I highly reccomend it.
But you can't just ask to see it, can you?
Ah, sure you can! I went in there and told them I was doing a paper on it. They didn't ask for any kind of verification other than what college I attended.
I've only seen one production of Floyd, by a small college here in Utah. It was pretty lame: cheaply designed, slowly-paced and poorly sung. But I was grateful someone had the nerve to mount it at all.
I do wish I had made the effort to get to the mini-tour that played southern California and Chicago, taking a number of original cast members with it. It was wonderful from everything I heard.
Oooh, I can?! I can't wait to see it! But will they get suspicious if I show up everyday with popcorn to see different videos for my *research*?
