Damn it. I just had a lot typed out and it got lost. Oh, well.
Tonight was a really perfect (for the most part) culmination of an incredible year, theatre-wise; lots of silly, random, wonderful things, great people and... Adam.
First little ironic thing: the waitress was saying what kinds of drinks they had.... Sodas, juices --> pineapple juice. I cracked up laughing. Etheb was like "she'll have pineapple juice." I just had to. I'm sure most of you know the root of my love for pineapples... just in the time frame and context, it was too perfect.
Anyway, the show. Adam was so much better tonight that he was last time, and perhaps the best I have ever, ever seen him... he seemed much more comfortable up there, and had a lot more energy. It always makes me so warm and fuzzy, seeing how happy he is up there. He really is simply a joy to watch. He's proving himself as a truly BRILLIANT musician, and there is one HELL of a rock star in there. Hearing him in person always reminds me what a truly beautiful, powerful voice he has. He sang the new CD in a different order this time, but did the song Model Prisoner instead of Mother's Child. He said he'd had a lot of requests for stuff from the old album, so yay. His encore was Maybe This Time from Cabaret (preceded by "y'all like showtunes?!"), which made my weekend; I mean, Kander and Ebb probably never intended for the song to be accompanied by a Fender, but it was a spine-chilling rendition. He also did Beautiful Song for the encore, and ended up returning again to do Glory because people kept screaming for it. There were a lot of VERY young fans there tonight, who were (unfortunately) clearly pissing him off, but he was good about it for the most part. They were inexplicably loud and obnoxious, and rocked out to Book of Endings lost in oblivion as to what it was about. Interestingly enough, after the song he addressed the controversy that's been surrounding it; he said it's "very tongue-in-cheek," then left it alone. Anyway, these "muppets" would NOT stop screaming "GLORY, GLORY!" After Maybe... he was like "I'll do Glory next time!
but he came back out again and said "you talked me into it! You want it, you got it!" It was still beautiful, but it's not as special when you've got thirteen-year-olds screaming for it. I'm glad I was sane when I was fourteen. VERY glad. They were rather embarrassing... and annoying. The other thing that¡¦s always interesting is to hear him speak about his music. He¡¦s not the most articulate, but it¡¦s really touching to hear this stuff from him, because it's so heartfelt.
Okay, so show ended, and we trotted off backstage. Adam took off RIGHT before we got to him; apparently the strategy of waiting until the crowd had passed didn't quite pan out as planned.
Adam appeared a few minutes later, and everyone hesitated as to who would approach him first. I think I went up to him second. A friend of mine had given me a RENT OBC playbill. "Hey, my friend is on a mission to have all of you guys sign this, so, could you help him out with that?" Adam laughs a little: "Well, good luck to him with that!" He said Jesse was supposed to be there, but couldn't make it. (Oh, yes. Sherie Rene Scott and Schele Williams were there...I had such an AIDA freak out moment, but couldn't muster the courage to go talk to them.) Anyway, me: "great show, by the way." Adam thanked me, then TM Cara, etheb and I went to take a picture with him. We all thanked him, and he put a hand on my shoulder and thanked us for coming. Yay. We were just about to leave, and etheb stopped walking. I guess she had seen Adam coming around the corner to head back to the bar, and was like "do you want your hug?¡¨ I was just about to say "oh, no... it's okay. Don't worry," but before I could even open my mouth, she was like "Adam, could she have a hug?" I turned around and found him literally right next to me, still just about to tell her not to worry about it... he grinned and said "sure!!" and before I knew it I was wrapped up in his arms. I was so surprised... all I could say was "aww, thank you!" Adam: "thanks sweetie!" YAY!
Anyway, he has a gig on December 29th; I won't be able to go, but it's okay. At some point, my priorities do have to become realistic, and I have a committment that I can't get out of. I'm sad, but I'm VERY happy to know that he'll be coming home.
A work of art is an invitation to love.
