Taking my mother to see King and I for January 9 matinee, and really conflicted on how to get best seats for best price. Appears that TKTS has been providing great center orch seats (not the 100 or 500), but how can I optimize my odds here - I'm confused on when to line up and which booth to go to for matinee seats? Should I wait until January to see if a better offer comes out that provides better choices than the Theatermania code? It's a really special occasion and I just want to optimize my chances without breaking the bank...especially knowing that there are a ton of those seats available. Any advice greatly appreciated.
I got in line between 9 and 9:30a, and got a great center seat when they opened at 10a. There were a lot of people in front of me, but there's lots of different shows. For shows with two performances on a given day, the TKTS booth will only sell matinee tickets when they open, and evening performances starting at 3p or somesuch.

If you follow Haterobics' advise, you will be fine. But listen: do not worry in the least if you end up in the 100s or 500s. Both times I've seen the show I've sat in both sections (about the 3rd seat from the center aisle) and it was a perfect view. Granted I was in rows K and M so I was far back enough not to miss anything, but maybe if you were in like C or D it could be a very minor thng. Enjoy!

Is it true that seats for matinee are released the day prior? Will I have any luck trying on Friday for these center orch seats?
When I went to TKTS on Sunday, I got row O of the orchestra in one of the center sections. I have seen the show 4 times, and my TKTS seat was my favorite view.

I think that is at other locations, not the Times Square one.
Try to get mezzanine seats. There is a giant ship at the beginning, so it may be hard to see Kelli if you're at the bottom
Saw it sitting in the orchestra right about 5 th or 6 th row. Great seats but we could see the stagehands pushing the ship onstage. Other than that great seats and show.
Does anyone know about where in the theatre the rush tickets have been located lately?

This is right but it is an option. You can go down to the south street seaport location to get tickets the day before.
Theaters don't always release tickets to TKTS all at once though. Sometimes they release more as it gets closer to show time. So it's hard to know that you'll get better seats by getting there earlier. I have heard the Times Square location gets better seats but I have no idea whether that's true or whether there's even a difference in inventory.

What prices were you guys looking at from TKTS? I know it's mostly been 50% but about how much did you pay?

And don't forget about Hiptix, if you fall into that category. I ended up doing that, and while I don't have my ticket handy to confirm which row, I was about five or six rows back in the orchestra, far right. Might've missed some of the visual impact that one would get being in the center, but given the staging it really wasn't bad at all.

We got tickets the day ahead on 12/5 at South Street Seaport for the Sunday matinee 12/6. Tickets were 40% off, so we paid $99 plus $4.50 in fees = $103.50 eac. Seats were L 513 and the one next to it, extreme right orchestra, so we missed whatever was going on to the right and in the back, which we were sad not to see. Luckily, the stage comes way out so we did get to see a good 95% of everything. Great show! Thought about moving to two empty seats in center orchestra at intermission, but not really sure if that is okay to do, so we didn't.

I never realized this until yesterday (because I always ask for the best available seat) but TKTS evidently discounts from the best available full price seat. (The woman in front of me was hoping for rear mezz to save money but the TKTS woman said she could give her a ticket there but the price would be the same.) The TKTS app has pricing info for all the shows so unless the most expensive seats aren't available, you should be able to estimate price by taking the applicable discount off the top price listed.
