hey all- Im new to the boards and just wanted to say hi. Whenever i go to a show, im always amazed at the stage door crowd and how the actors handle that. Especially with a huge show like Wicked or Rent. Anyone have any interesting encounters in either a good or a bad way? or any actor who has a reputation for being perticurally nice or anti fan at the door? Ive had both. I know that its hard doing shows 8 times a week for so long, but i always think its kind of wrong when actors are so blantently passive or annoyed. Maybe thats just me.
I met brian stokes mitchel's understudy for Man of La Mancha (he was performing in the chorus and my friends were firends with him) when he found out that I was interested in theatre and going on an audition the next day he took me backstage gave me a tour and a prop from the show - as well as his e-mail address because he teaches classes.
i never took the time at wicked to go and find idina or JLT, but i went several times when the BFO was running and that was just madness. where is the stage door of the gershwin? i've never bothered to wait and come to think of it, i don't even think i would know where to go!
The Gershwin stage door is madness. I wouldn't ever go again. If you want to try it be prepared to come out with bruises - people are SO brutal. Not worth it in my opinion.
First time I did Wicked stagedoor, 10 people were there. You could literally stand right next to Idina and talk to her. The last time I was in town, we went so she could sign our CDs, a little girl was practically on my back and older women were even screaming. I also love it how every girl standing there thinks they are Cheno's, Idina's or JLT's best friend. (sarcasm intended) Not to mention the same people showing up after every show......so much that Cheno remembers their names.
I saw Wicked before it got really nuts (Thanksgiving weekend '03) but there were still a good 150 people. This was before all of the "IDINA IS SUCH A BITCH!" stories, and all of that crap. She was quiet, but definitely nice. It was still madness, but not nearly as bad as it's been lately.
My favorite person to watch working the crowds has got to be Adam Pascal. I saw him bitch someone out once, and it was terribly amusing. Obviously he used to not be so good about it, and that's where the "viva la Diva" stuff came from during the RENT days, but now he's a lot friendlier. He's very much got something about him that makes it looks like he absolutely knows how much people adore him, but he's wonderful. And take it from me, Adam fans can be very silly.
As for it being "wrong" when they're not friendly, I'm sick of re-hashing this. Their job ends when the curtain goes down; they aren't getting paid to meet you, take pictures, and sign autographs. It's something extra they do, for any one of a million reasons, but they have absolutely no obligation to do so. Of course it's disappointing when you don't get to meet someone, but meeting an actor is a privilege, not a right.
Oh, and... welcome, by the way. Or, shall I say...
