Ok, this for all and any of you who have seen The Light in the Piazza. At the end of Aiutami there is a sound that resembles a slap. For a long time this has confused me. Is this actually a slap? If so, who's getting slapped? If not, what the heck is it? Thanks!

Posted: 6/20/05 at 3:07amno slap it's actually an instrument made out of wood that produces the slap sound. Percussionsts use it for songs like Sleigh Ride and other holiday songs. Probably some western themed songs too. The orchestration is probably trying to hint at something dramtically by it's use. I really haven't figured out what Aiutemi is trying to say dramatically yet, so I can't say what the purpose of the slap sound is.

Cool, thanks! I've always found the song to be a bit confusing myself. Signora shares her philosophy on relationships, that part I mostly understand. She also explains what is going on, but her explanation doesn't seem to line up...Guiseppe asks, "Was she as sweet as she looks?" When? Was there another section of dialouge taken out? Is the fact that he sings along with Fabrizio supposed to imply that he's asking? Franca also wants to know in her own special way...the only thing she sings in this section is "In un catastrofe"
I dunno, maybe I'm just not smart enough to see it for what it'supposed to be. Ah well, thanks for your help, Jazzysuite82!!!!

Random Fact of information, Aryn, the instrument is actually called a 'Whip' (And it's fun to play).
It just sounded like there was supposed to be a slap there (expecially following the lyrics). Anyway, I'm done talking now...

This song is sort of visual Aryn, so to understand it fully you'd have to see the show.

Yeah, Franca is basically cuddling up to Fabricio during this song - so it's her "own special way." That girl is a player.
No wonder Clara goes crazy on her during "Octet" - I would too!

Good question but i have no clue what is going on in Piazza AT ALL! Becasue i am in St. Louis i can only experience Broadway shows vicariously through cast albums. They make a huge book to accompany the CD and yet do not give a synopsis! Give me a break! like why is Clara going crazy in that one song?
Here is my thinking
Clara and her mother go to Italy for vacation. her mother has been there and is telling her things that have happened and things about statues that happen to be marble and naked, something clara doent see alot where she is from. then her hat blows away and is caught by mr. italian love interset and they fall instantly in love. maragret is apprehensive about it. then clara and fabrizio walk around in the place that he knows. Then for some reason some lady sings about love being nice TILL SOME ONE YOUNGER COMES ALONG. (capitalized becasue she gets really loud when she sings it.) then her mom has a dividing day whatever that means . then clara and fabrizio who is now poetically fluent in english start to do it until the mother comes in. Then there are a whole bunch of songs i dont understand including when clara goes crazy looking for museo and when she gets into a catfight with this one girl. Her mom then informs us that clara got kicked in the head by a pony -- is that why she is crazy.i dont understand the rest of the show.
am i remotley close to the story line?

Oh yeah, and thanks Kai for your lovely, random bit of information!
