I went to see "Baker's Wife" at Paper Mill Playhouse last night and I must say that Alice Ripley was more impressive than I expected. I honestly think that she can do ANYTHING vocally. Her "Meadowlark" was breathtaking -- she was able to sing the first verse with a legit soprano style and then she belted the rest of the verses like you wouldn't believe! The raw emotion that she brought to the entire production was amazing. Overall, I wasn't entirely sold on the production, but Steve Schwartz' score and the performances of the 3 leads (Alice, Lenny Wolpe and Max von Essen) made the evening memorable.
Good to hear Hanna. I'll be there in about a week, and so excited to hear La Ripley belt it out!
La Ripley. I love it.
A title that has been well earned, in my honest opinion.
Would LOVE to hear Alice do damage to the "Wicked" songs everyone either loves or hates. (Watch out for the angry posts, Hannah!!!) She could handle both roles. Wouldn't that be FUNNY!!! Wicked -- starring Alice Ripley as Elphie on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. On Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, she stars as Galinda and on Wednesdays and Saturdays, she's green in the morning and blonde in the evening.
LOL!!!!!
Hey, don't laugh. I might go see Wicked again if she played both roles.
Only if Emily Skinner plays whatever role Alice isn't playing.:) Can you imagine?
I heard she's going to play the Time Clock Dragon, or whatever the hell it's called.
YAY FOR ALICE! I would LOVE to see this production...too bad I'm so far away.
Quite true...Alice can do almost anything...and bwaysinger, I'll go see Wicked with you when she's in it...it'll be our first date! hehe

I'll be seeing it on Wednesday... yay.
PS: I'd like to see Emily's Galinda to Al's Elphaba, and I'm very sad I just admitted to that... I see Emily more in a pink puffy dress than Alice, quite frankly... and Emily's just WRONG for Elphie...
Alice Ripley is amaaaaaaazing. I wish I could see Baker's Wife!!! Her "Meadowlark" must be f-ing phenomenal.
"Meadowlark" is not to be believed. On the first verse I thought ". . . well she does have a gorgeous head voice, but I know she can belt. I wonder if she's been directed to sing this legit?" Then she put it into gear. MAN . . . I'd pass out programs just to hear that every night.

If they did WICKED, that would be interesting. But I think Alice would Galinda/Glinda (because of her range) and Emily would Elphaba (because of her range).

Wicked-- I think Alice could play either role, but that Emily is all wrong for Elphaba (voice aside).
Moving on from that topic, since it will never happen.
I saw The Baker's Wife this evening. Alice redefines "Meodowlark". Her interpretation was flawless--
Not only was her voice pure and crystal clear, her entire demeanor just rivets you. It was incredibly intense.
She certainly outdid herself in the role. The only problem I had with her performance was an inconsistant accent, but her portrayal was so dead on that you barely noticed it unless you were looking for it.
Definitely, there was so much genuine emotion invested in Alice's entire performance in "Meadowlark" and that seemed to bring the song to a different level. The way the play is constructed, it's difficult to understand why Genevieve would just take off with Dominique on a whim. However, Alice is able to embody that struggle with a sense of total emotional imbalance to where you feel as if you are experience a bird thrashing against the sides of the cage for freedom.
As far as the accents go, I felt Alice's was the strongest and most consistent in the entire cast. The one thing that bothered me about the production, however, was the total lack of an accent for many of the actors and many others who had fleeting accents.
anyone have her singing this "meadowlark"? pm me if you do, please...
