Has anyone seen Alice Ripley's band perform recently? I am bringing my daughter to NY at the end of the month and she loved her in Next to Normal. Alice will be performing with her band and I am trying to find out if she performs her musical theatre material or her own music during her band concerts. Any insight would be great!

She'll may do a mix of both kinds. I know she just had a single come out a while ago.

It depends on what she's feeling like doing. I went to a show of hers at the Metropolitan Room on May 27, and she sang with a pianist, doing mostly musical theater and jazz. She said at the beginning of the set that due to personal circumstance (death in the family) that she was changing up things. The set list was

1) "Still Hurting" by Jason Robert Brown from the Last Five Years
2) "Lush Life" (jazz standard)
3) "Danny Boy"
4) "I Miss the Mountains" by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey from next to normal
5) "Happy Phantom" by Tori Amos
6) "Mother" by Tori Amos
7) "Losing My Mind" by Stephen Sondheim from Follies
8 ) "On My Own" by Alain Boubil and Claude Schoenberg from Les Miserables
9) "Arms of Love" by Amy Grant
10) "Sophisticated Lady" (jazz standard)
11) "So Anyway" by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey from next to normal

Wow, that actually sounds great! If she sang mostly showtunes, my daughter would be in heaven. If she sings her own things, not sure.

Thanks so much for remembering the songs, really helps! How early did you get there and did you have good seats (see well)?

if the band Ripley is performing, i don't expect a lot of showtunes. Have you or your daughter ever heard the music from their 2 cds? It is more alt. rock than showtunes.

Some of Ripleytheband's stuff is interesting and experimental in an almost performance-art way. There was a video a while back of Ripley performing with almost no musicians, but with percussion attached to her hands and legs so that as she moved and sang/chanted, it generated sort of hypnotic percussive musical accompaniment.

Right, we should distinguish between Alice Ripley and Ripley The Band. I've never seen a performance of Ripley the Band.

Alice Ripley is performing at the Metropolitan Room on July 16, 18, 22, and 29, all dates at 9:30 pm. The performance I attended was at the Metropolitan Room.

If you want to see Alice Ripley perform musical theater material, perhaps you should go see her at the Metropolitan Room instead of seeing the band.
