I can't begin to tell you how UNexcited am I am to see this.....
"All Shook Up, a new musical featuring the tunes of Elvis Presley, is set to be the next tenant at Broadway's Marquis Theatre, which Thoroughly Modern Millie will vacate on June 20. All Shook Up, currently running at Goodspeed Musicals' Norma Terris Theatre, will begin performances on the Great White Way on February 20, 2005 in preparation for a March 24, 2005 opening.
A comedy set in middle America in 1955, All Shook Up, which features a book by Joe DiPietro, is not a biographical revue. In the musical, one girl's wish and a surprise visit from a mysterious leather-jacketed, guitar-playing stranger will lead a small town to discover the magic of romance and the power of rock & roll. Songs in the show include "Heartbreak Hotel," "Love Me Tender," "Don't Be Cruel," "Can't Help Falling in Love" and "All Shook Up."
All Shook Up, directed by Christopher Ashley and choreographed by Jodi Moccia, is currently playing at Goodspeed through June 6. The cast there includes Jennifer Gambatese, Jonathan Hadary, Leah Hocking, Ashton Holmes, Nikki M. James, John Jellison, Alix Korey, Manley Pope, Mark Price and Sharon Wilkins.
After Goodspeed, All Shook Up will head to Chicago's Cadillac Palace Theatre, where it will run from December 21, 2004 through January 23, 2005. The show features scenic design by David Rockwell, costume design by David C. Woolard and lighting design by Kenneth Posner. "

My family saw All Shook Up this weekend and really liked it a lot. I saw a segment about it on the news and it seems a lot like Footloose, but I guess I'll hold my judgement until I see it next week.
I CANT WAIT too see the pre-broadway tryout in chicago. Already got my tickets!! haha I think it looks good....kinda sounds like a mamma mia type show.
It might be good...or at least entertaining but I'm not the biggest Elvis fan.
I'm not real excited about this either, Margo, but there is probably a market for this type of show on Broadway. A lot of folks loved Elvis's music. In fact, I have good memories of seeing Elvis in concert the year before he died. Mom and Dad were kind enough to drag me along to see him in 1976. Elvis had put on a few lbs. and was starting to slip a bit musically, but he still had tons of middle aged women swooning and throwing bouquets of flowers at him. I'm happy to give "All Shook Up" a chance.
Why did they have to choose Elvis? At the same time, read my last post on this issue. What really is originality? Think about it...

June 20 to Feb 20 seems like a long time to keep The Marquis dark.
As much as I hate to see Millie close, I see their grosses, and, well, it seems like it's time to move on,
and allthough I'm not that much of an Elvis fan, I've gotta admit a fascination, (I did visit Graceland).
No hard feelings here, best wishes, and break a leg "All Shook Up"!
MILLIE should've moved to a smaller theatre a long time ago. They doomed it by keeping it in such a large house. Granted, making it a good show, would've helped to. It was fun, Sutton Foster was great, but it needed something more, a message, like URINETOWN, or AVENUE Q, or WICKED.
I thought I heard that Patrick Stewart was coming back to do A CHRISTMAS CAROL again. They did it at the Marquis a few years ago. Any chance they would put it there for the holidays?

Another jukebox show. C'mon, where are the new composers?

I'm with Plum. This is a waste of a good, central location. How many more shows like this will open on Broadway? We Will Rock You is already on its way, though if it stays the same way it shouldn't last more than a week after opening.

Well, is it really a waste of a good location if there aren't any other shows to go in there? There's almost always a few empty houses, and I wouldn't say any show was a waste of a theater until shows were not allowed to open on Broadway because there was no place to put them. Which really is not the case. I see your point in that the Marquis is a big theater, and in a good spot, but All Shook Up moving in there is really not preventing any other shows from opening.
Well... Mamma Mia! has been making tons of cash at the Winter Garden, and is paying hundreds of people still.
'All Shook Up' has sparked an interest in some folks who would never normally be interested in a Broadway show. I welcome them to the Great White Way.
(Two very old and very frequently seen arguments, I know... but very valid.)
I am also not a big Elvis fan, but this could be a fun show. Yes I'd like to see something more original, but I hate more is to see dark theaters.

I am sure there will be some "speciality" shows in the meantime...unless there are some huge theater renovations needed.
Maybe Linda Eder can do another Christmas Show? (hint hint)
An Elvis musical was bound to happen. It might be pretty good, just as long as the songs fit into the storyline.
Hmmmm... IMO, not quite worthy of replacing Millie...
Isn't this the one with Manley Pope?

Well then, I guess the shallow teenager in me will be responsible for a visit to the Marquis next year. He's gorgeous.

Exactly, it shouldn't be replacing something like Millie. As a theatregoer, I hate these shows. Yes, I understand that these are commercial hits, and yes, I would invest in them, but no, I do not welcome them in any way.
I will never forget the night I sat through We Will Rock You - the biggest pile of crap in the West Ebd - and desperately wished that the sell out crowd would flock to the struggling Ragtime, a superior and excellent show. Sadly Ragtime closed not long after. We Will Rock You continues to thrive.

Obviously there's a market for it, so why do we all care so much? We're not all going to love every single show that comes to Broadway, that's the amazing thing, there's something for everyone. Sure this genre isn't my thing, but I'm sure it appeals to some people. It is a shame that Millie couldn't just move to another theatre, but quit whining, maybe All Shook Up will turn out to be decent.
YIKES, CRIKEY, AND HARRUMPH!
