I guess you're right it's technically begging, but the request is pretty innocuous form my perspective.
"For fans of All That Chat
The McAfee Secure yearly subscription is not something we can fund through our regular advertising and affiliate link receipts. If you would like to contribute to the funding, please do so through PayPal by clicking the button below. If everyone participates, it will only take a few dollars per poster."
You're clearly not a fan so I doubt any request would have been received well.

I know it's only speculation, but that argument (about folks behind Spiderman having something to do with the takedown) could possibly have some merit...
Just sayin...

I'm not saying Julie Taymor - but what is entirely possible are the money people behind the show - people with a great deal to lose and who likely have experience in mass marketing campaigns (which include counteracting negative publicity) could possibly have something to do with it.
I'm sorry, but random sites, especially ones that A) don't handle sensitive information, and B) don't hand money transactions don't get hacked unless they are targeted.

Posted: 1/12/11 at 7:25pmThen why hasn't BWW been hacked yet? Or the Onion, or NY Mag, or Conan O'Brien? The Onion even hailed the death of Taymor as good for the show. It's not as if ATC was the only source negative publicity, and I highly doubt that board gets enough traffic to be even on the radar of hackers hired by "the money people." Your theory sounds like nothing more than ATC members giving themselves an inflated sense of importance.

"At the very least, it IS reliably about broadway, and personal attacks are not allowed there.
That is, unless you're a longtime/established poster...in which case, you can pretty much say whatever you want without fear of deletion."
Truer words were never spoken...
I left the board because apparently at the time, you had to be a friend of Michael, VJ or Ann in order to say what was on your mind. Anyone else had to be PC or you were deleted.
I had enough of that. I appreciate the fact that opinions shouldn't be so political and stuff but over there the double standards were becoming so blatant that I left. Sad.

Posted: 1/13/11 at 3:59pmIt couldn't have happened to a more deserving group of trolls, hags, and thugs. The pomp and arrogance and self-pride of some of the posters is off-putting. And I blame the modertaors -- they lead by example with their haught and condescension. I hope they lose their shirts on putting a virus protection into place. Not that I'd want to see ANY of them shirtless.

Posted: 1/14/11 at 6:44amI don't get the hate for ATC. There are some incredibly well informed people posting there - I'm thinking of Alan Scott - and, personally, I learn a lot from them. One quickly comes to know the bad guys and avoids them. Just like here.

Please don't "learn a lot" from anyone at All That Chat...that's just sad.
I'm filled with schadenfreude that they're down. I'm actually surprised it hasn't been disabled before by concerned producer-types, or really just anyone who cares about a show who has the technological ability to do it. That board has been one of the worst things to happen to theatre in recent years, in my opinion.
