I wasn't crazy about him either, nor were two of my friends that saw it with me. I think one of the problems was the fact that the relationship between Johanna and Anthony was underdeveloped. In the movie, I felt that Johanna really had no interest in Anthony, or having a happy life with him, she was just using him as a means to escape. And since "Kiss Me" was cut, we don't even see a lot of interaction between the two, giving a stronger impression that Anthony is infatuated with someone he knows next to nothing about.
heh, During the "Johanna" quartet, my friend leaned over and wispered to me, "He's so creepy!" I replied to "well, he's not SUPPOSED to, but yeah..." She responded with, "His eyes are so creepy!"

Didn't I hear he's playing the young Voldemort in a Harry Potter film?
He'd be great for that!

Posted: 12/23/07 at 10:43amAdd me to the list of folks who thought he was wrong in the role, took me completely out of every scene he was in, looked more like a gay anorexic underwear model than someon pining away for a girl. Then again, I also agree with those who say Anthony & Johanna were merely sideline players in this film and their roles should have been beefed up (and Anthony recast.) Other than that (and that is a BIG THAT) - I enjoyed Tim Burton's film...but give me the Hal Prince (or even John Doyle) production over this movie any day of the week.

I wasn't too familiar with the play and when they heard it was being turned into a musical I tried to stop learning more about it so that I could go in and come out suprised (which worked quite well) So I really didn't have an opinion of what Anthony was supposed to be.
On that note, I do agree he was quite effeminate and he resembled an artsy modern subculture that didn't seem to fit quite well in the context but that didn't really bother me. Sure his voice was a little weak and probably not keen for Broadway but hell none of their voices are and I think it worked along well with the others.
Cages or wings? Which do you prefer? Ask the birds. Fear or love, baby? Don't say the answer Actions speak louder than words. (Tick, Tick... BOOM!)
