Posted: 8/10/04 at 11:40pmI think it's funny that whenever someone auditions for American Idol, and has too much of a vibrato for Pop music-- they always say, "You'd be great on Broadway, just not here..." LIKE IT'S THAT EASY!!!!

Posted: 8/11/04 at 12:30amI am so disappointed that AI is not coming to Hawaii this year. I am also surprised at this considering they found at least four of the top 32 singers here including Diana DeGarmo who was the runner-up.

Posted: 8/11/04 at 12:35amDiana DeGarmo was from the south. Why would she have been at the Hawaii audition? I think you mean Jasmine Trias who was 3rd.

Posted: 8/11/04 at 1:28amThanks for the advice and suggestions everyone. I apperciate it and value your opinions, that's why I asked here. It's just very unfair, as a Broadway/classically trained singer that you can't sing quality songs, or you're considered "too Broadway". I don't know of many pop songs that can show off range like a showtune can. I mean what song is the pop equivilant(sp?) of "Defying Gravity"? I can't think of one. And I can't really see myself singing a Britney, or Christina song, which is basically what they want anyway. Someone suggested I sing "Bewwitched,Bothered, and Bewildered" from Pal Joey. I don't know, I might just go audition for the hell of it, sing a good song and if I'm "too Broadway" for them, screw it.

If you're concerned about showing off range, look along the lines of Mariah and Whitney.
But be careful.
Don't sing the songs unless you can REALLY sing them.
It's the pop equivalent of Sondheim.
If you're mediocre, everyone will know, and will hate you.

Posted: 8/11/04 at 2:19amDoes anyone else think it would be a good idea to have a Broadway version of AI. I know there is something like it for country music, why not Broadway. And instead of getting a recording contract, they can be in a Broadway show.

They have a reality show for everything nowadays:
pop stars/singers
people who CAN'T sing (WB's Next Big Superstar)
comedians
stunt doubles
ugly people who want a makeover
desparate people looking for a boyfriend/girlfriend
people who want to work for Donald Trump
Why not a Broadway one? Maybe the winner doesn't have to get a lead role up front, but gets an agent, auditions, and maybe a role in the ensemble. And then the winner can move onto bigger things.

Posted: 8/11/04 at 4:12amI think an American Idol type show for Broadway singers would be an exellent idea. Then there would at least be some real talent. I'm not auditioning for American Idol to be the next Britney, or anything like that, an audition's an audition, and I just thought it would be different and fun to try. But I agree there should be some kind of talent show for us. Didn't VH1 try to have some sort of show like that called Divas? But then that left the guys out.

Posted: 8/12/04 at 9:35pmHi Lara, I think singing a Broadway song is a fabulous idea! But I would not pick those songs. Just my opinion though...do what you feel is right and GOOD LUCK! Bring Broadway back!

Posted: 8/12/04 at 10:25pmI think it's more about style than the song you're singing. They're looking for that pop or R&B style, so give them that. You can sing anything you want if you make it your own in the style they are looking for. You CAN sing If I Were a Rich Man, just not like Zero Mostel. Stand out, be original. Don't be Mariah or Whitney or Idina. Be YOU! And that goes for show auditions as well. I keep reading about people trying to sing like someone else. Sing like you, not like the person on the CD. What casting directors are looking for is what separates you from the thousands that have auditioned before you? If you give them that, then you're already ahead of the game.

You can get away with a showtune for AI auditions as long as it doesn't feel too much like a showtune. It has something to do with how you perform it but there are a lot of contemporary showtunes that would work fine.
But I would definitely put Defying Gravity on the audition blacklist along with "On My Own," "Tomorrow," "One Song Glory," and "I've Got Rhythm".

IT'S RAINING MEN!
But if you don't have the goods, you will kill the song. I always do that song if I must do a pop song. I performed it one night at a resteuraunt and the DJ's like 'You blew the mic away girlfriend' and I also sang it at Karaoke night in Mexico. Everyone loved it.
I would also recomend Celine Dion's I drove all night, and or Respect, or Holding out for a Hero.

Someone did do that, i think in the 1st season. That must be why it's in the songbook. i don't think he made it past the first or second callback. it was pretty funny, though. and no, he couldn't really sing.
