It seemed that ever since the press was kicked off as Tony voters back in 2009 that the remaining voters (several of them being producers) were going to vote for the much more commercially viable show like Newsies, Beautiful, and An American in Paris. But I think the voters realize that those shows are already going to be hits no matter what that they didn't really need the Best Musical Tony at all where the more artistically crafted shows need the Tony more to stay alive.

Or just perhaps, the voters voted for what they personally considered the best and don't adopt a voting strategy from season to season.  Perhaps the conspiracy theories are really just a silly game fans like to play to sound smart as if they are as highly connected and "in the know" as Riedel.

Very very few musicals have ever won more than four Tonys (only 52 by my count)

How is 52 out of a total 68 Best Musicals in the history of the Tonys "very few"?  That's actually "most".  Unless you're just counting every musical under the sun, but I'm not sure how that would be relevant.

@bdn, thanks for your insights. And u r right American in Paris is not the comparison. Since I was bored in OTT and left at intermission, I assumed (and I think correctly) that AAIP will not be for me as well. I tried to listen to the cast recording and couldn't get past the first song (Sorry I know it is Gershwin) The best new musical for me is Something Rotten, which I saw on my May visit.   But I go to the theater to be entertained (not to be taught any life lesson or anything like that) and SR did it for me.

I've seen Once a few years back and didn't like it. I saw Newsies on tour last year and agree that show is far superior than Once!

"You're also a major NEWSIES fan, which greatly influences any neutral objectivity that may have existed. "

Count me as another person who thought "Newsies" was much better than "Once" which I found quite boring. I also thought "Matilda" was robbed when "Kinky Boots" won in 2014.

AAIP did not deserve to win

Newsies was 10 times better than Once.

Guys

i am not arguing the merits of a American in Paris, I am merely trying to convey that Michael Riedel called it wrong once again.
