An Audra Upset?

Posted: 5/16/07 at 9:20pmEbersole has been the front runner since the season began, but with Audra's Tony history, could she pull at Patti/LaChanze and take the award?

Posted: 5/16/07 at 9:23pmpatti lachanze bothers me everytime it is mentioned. I think it slightly possible but higly doubtful because Ebersole was just unbelivable and deserves the award more than patti did last year (coming from the guy who didnt like grey gardens and is a hugh patti fan) And audra could do it another year but it isnt possible I think only because of the role she is in.

It's possible, but I think Christine's performance is just so nuanced and hilarious and heartbreaking that I can't fathom them giving the Tony to anyone else. I mean, it's one of those performances where you just watch it and think "this could be the best performance I'll ever see."
Audra was incredible as well, and I think in any other year she'd be a shoe-in for the Tony. I just don't think anything compares to Christine's performance.

Posted: 5/16/07 at 9:26pmI don't see how Patti/LaChanze was an upset. LaChanze was favored to win from the get-go, as I recall.

I had always thought Patti was the front-runner.
Anyway, I agree with gumbo.

Patti was the front runner, but not to the extent that Ebersole is this year.
It's Ebersole's year. And I think if anyone were to upset it'd be Murphy. It's gonna be a while before McDonald wins her 5th Tony, I believe.

I saw both musicals-
Audra's performance was the most capivating, and had me in tears.
I'd be delighted for her to win another Tony. While I agree that Christine was the best thing about GG, that whole show left me cold.

Murphy got fantastic reviews too, but not to the extent of McDonald.
McDonald OWNS 110. Cerveris and Murphy both reign supreme over LoveMusik.
Reviews for 110 have been all about the McDonald.
McDonald's reviews are only a little less than Ebersole's.
It's Ebersole's year, sure, but a McDonald upset is certainly possible. Unlikely, but possible.

Grey Gardens' 10 nominations I feel will muster up the support for an Ebersole win, however, Audra is Audra, and I almost (in a positive way) consider her a Tony Award winning theatrical institution, who could warrant enough voter support to top Ebersole.

Posted: 5/16/07 at 11:38pmI don't think it will happen. It's been sometime since we've seen this much talk about one performance. And since Bratley called this "the best performance I've seen in a musical ever." I think that speaks for itself. Plus Ebesersole is playing two different parts in a brillant musical while Audra shines in lackluster revival of a musical (at least according to reviews).

Posted: 5/16/07 at 11:40pmThe revival is more than lackluster, I actually thought it was quite good, but I agree with you on all other points.

Um...and the GG reviews were across the board raves?

That's just from what I've read about the revival on this board. Most people say the show itself was "okay" but Audra was great.
And no, GG didn't get raves, but it took a really odd story and made it into a fairly successful Broadway musical.

Posted: 5/16/07 at 11:52pmAh. Well, I thought it was done very well, I just think the material is a little lacking. That's no fault of this production of it, just how it's written. But I actually had less of a problem with it than most people, it seems. I thought it was better than just okay, and I'd recommend it (though, admittedly, mostly for Audra).

Posted: 5/17/07 at 12:11amI would love for Audra McDonald to sweep in and snatch the Tony at last minute, but I really think it is Christine Ebersole's turn.

Ebersole deserves it.
And it wouldn't be appropriate to link McDonald with LaChanze in the LuPone/LaChanze scenario.
And no, LaChanze was NOT favored to win from the beginning.
I don't think Audra will be winning this, and I don't think she should.

Conventional wisdom would seem to point to Ebersole as the clear winner this year but you never know. It's not like the three major contenders are lacking in the awards department, and as for this being "Ebersole's Year" it's not like she's been nominated a million times and has never won - she got her first Tony her first time at bat, as did McDonald and Murphy. And this year there is a first-timer in the mix.
I do agree that Ebersole is giving a magnificent performance and will most likely win, but it is a very tight race between three of the most high powered female stars to grace Broadway in years. Don't forget - Merman gave one of those legendary Broadway performances that continues to define the genre, and she didn't win that year.

Posted: 5/17/07 at 1:05amBut look who she lost to...
#20re: An Audra Upset?
Posted: 5/17/07 at 1:13amYeah, but in terms of history, Merman's Rose is far better remembered than Mary Martin's Maria. No doubt Martin was magnificent in TSOM, but Merman's performance is legendary. It's like comparing the performances in this year's race - they are all fabulous, but Ebersole's has already become the stuff of legend. And as I said, she most probably will win. But it's not a given - she has stiff competition. And that's what makes it so much fun to talk about. How boring would it be if Ebersole were up against - well I'm not going to name names and incur the wrath of a 1000 other posters - if she were up against a group of mediocre talents?
#21re: An Audra Upset?
Posted: 5/17/07 at 1:18amKep in mind that Merman apparently got bored easily with Mama Rose (or any role) and began to phone it in. Sondheim's said that they would tell her there was a celebrity in the audience show she wouldn't walk through the show.

#23re: An Audra Upset?
Posted: 5/17/07 at 1:25amD2, I agree with your theory but to be fair, I do believe that Martin's performance would be better remembered and celebrated if Julie Andrews hadn't completely become Maria for most of the world.

saw 110 tonight...homegirl more than deserves Tony # 5 for this!! Blew. me. away.
I'm so dazed and tired from the show to go into it too deep and I'm sure that it's going to Ebersole this year and she more than deserves it too BUT if Audra pulls an upset I will dance with joy because this woman cannot be praised enough.
