Posted: 12/8/11 at 1:07pmI think Grease and Follies are so very similar! They're also very film noir!

Comparing Grease to anything but a huge pile of dung is insulting to any self respecting theatre person. Comparing it to Sondheim is grounds for deportation.
Or not. I actually have a lot of respect for Grease. It was a scrappy and bawdy little local show in Chicago that caught fire on Broadway and became a massive success even before the sanitized film was released. Then it went global and became one of the most successful musicals of all time. Kudos to them! Other than being a musical and having a Broadway run, it has nothing in common with Follies or Sondheim, but then most musicals don't have much in common with Follies and Sondheim. I know ridiculing Grease is the "thing to do", but I can't really fault the creative team for doing something so well that it ultimately became an international icon. Gee, how...awful? LOL

I dunno. I bet if we played some "FOLLIES Six Degrees of Separation", we'd find they're a lot more similar than we'd comfortable care to admit.
